Found a KTM motor during a mc junkyard visit.

Went to the local mc junkyard this AM, and while scrounging around some cabinets and shelves in the back of the storage area, I spotted some silver paint and the telltale blue KTM logo.

Didnt find what I went for, but ended up going home with a silver KTM motor, pison is stamped 020 and cylinder is a hair over 46mm.

Clock casting has 78 under the arrow, and the arrow points to 9.  Number on the right side case, below the cylinder is 9-5210974.

So is it a 78 or 79 Jackpiner?

No other 70's or 80's ktm stuff anywhere in the yard. The guy said they must have put it away in the cabinet backwhen they used that part of the storage building.  He thought it was a 250.

I bought it (and a complete Bridgestone Sport 90 motor, carb, pipe, and air cleaner) after about 30 minutes of discussion for an excellent price.

I really loved my 75 Jackpiner and have always regretted selling it. Do chassis or rolling chassis ever come up for sale?
Thanks.

Andy,  Based on the numbers you listed, it is a 79 175GS.  Are you interested in selling it?  PM me interested.  James

Probably a late 79 175 based on the 10,974 serial number. The 79 model was an MC80 either without a rear fender loop in MX trim, or GS80 with the added rear fender loop on the exact same frame, and the possible addition of lights and other Enduro equipment. I just recently sold Gary Ellis an early 1980 bare 175 frame with a 175 bottom end and rod kit that I had. Mike

James; after thinking about it, (with all the other priorities i currently have) I would probably end up taking the motor to Mid Ohio this summer and selling it.  I will take some detailed pics for you to review and then we can talk.

Mike; thanks for the info.

Andy,

I would consider it a personal favor if you would help James in any way possible. James broke up a complete Hercules transmission by GIVING me a transmission gear that I desperately needed.

I owe him a debt of gratitude. And anything else I can do for him to reciprocate his generosity.

A bit late but just noticed this.......

Andy, the 175 motor you have or had #9-5210974, well by chance I've got the next one in sequence #9-5210975 / date clock reads on the case reads 78-9,

Here is a photo as was when I obtained it. Frame # 855-10664, The frame has been painted red, but it was originally orange and suspect it's late 78 early 79 (MC-5 / MX-6) came with a 78 title.

Take care
Dave

Unfortunately no side covers, though came kitted with Hi-point air box, Girling reservoir shocks and Preston fenders along with a Mikuni carb. Just recently started piddling on it with the intent to refurbish it a bit, hopefully we can do it some justice.

Take care

The 78 MC-5 and early 79 MX-6 stock airbox had a very difficult to replace air filter assembly, so Hi-point, the aftermarket company John Penton owned at one time produced an easier solution with an aftermarket air box and easy removal air filter assembly from underneath the side panel. I think Acerbis made a version of it also. I use them on all my bikes and you can find them for sale once in a while on eBay.  They look almost identical but some are opaque. Mike.

Hey David,

What is that white flap inside the box for?  Is that to divert any water coming in from the top off the filter?

James,

Yes you are correct ......The air opening is on the top back side of the box and there is a trimmed flap fitted between the opening and filter diverting the air down into the bottom of the box shielding the filter form directly ingesting debris / water or such.

Take care
