Is that a 1973 "black" motor in the Detroit bike link that started this post?  Looks like the black motor clutch cover but, painted silver.  Any insight?  Cheers.

Hi all,
Here are a couple links to pics of my 74 250 HS. Will try to post descriptions of the bikes for sale later tonight.

Mike,
The Craigslist bike has the early 74 tin rear fender mounts on the corners of the rear frame loop, as Dave's bike does as well, indicating a fairly early 74 probably made somewhere around December or January, but unlike Dave's it has the reinforced lay down shock mount rear down tubes. Dave's has a frame number of 401, or Jan. 74, so the reinforced rear frame tubes may put the craigslist bike slightly later that Dave's bike. The 74 1/2 250 HS that I just picked up has a frame number of 411- and the reinforced lay down shock rear down tubes but the later single center rear fender mount, not the tin corner mounts, since it was made Nov. 74. Well, it's still for sale. Looks like it might be a lot closer to a thousand dollar bike than the asking price. Anybody called on it? I would love to get it. I just have too many interests tying up my spending cash.

I sent an offer since he is local and received a prompt reply [V]

One person opinon I guess ??????

With all due respect, seats are hard to find anymore, and I just purchased the exact same bike with a speedo but no headlight for $1100 in good running condition but needing possibly crank seals and the transmission shifting looked at, which can be done when the crank seals are replaced. I have a correct headlight, vs the $75-80 PP one, so at least to me, $2000 is way too much. They haven't been bringing much more than that in better shape. 74 1/2 is a border line year in my opinion value wise, with earlier being more valuable. Mike

Way too many vintage bikes especially Pentons asking price is way too high for the current market.  I see it a lot.  When a bike takes a long time to sell it is not opinion.  It is the sign the person is asking more than the market will bear. My Grandfather used to say, "When something sells it shows it's worth. It was proved because someone paid it." Kip is on that bike at a max of $1000 as it sits.

There are definite plus and minus aspects.  It runs and comes with a title and to some the title alone adds considerable value.  I never question what someone asks but only consider what is personally affordable.  A number of us have investments that are well above market prices.

Doing some rough and quick math for just some basics:
(Engine work and something more original in lighting additional)

Seat base, foam, cover, hardware - $300
Fenders - $130
Filter/filter oil - $75
Tires and tubes - $250
Shocks - $250
Chain - $75

Total - $1080.

That being said I am still willing to go take a look or offer transportation.

Dale, many times people have more in a restoration than the actual worth but a bike is only worth what the market will bear. Having spent too many dollars on a bike does not make it worth that. It is worth what it is worth. All in all a lot of the asking prices now days is too high and that is why many bikes don't sell very quickly. Dreamers wishing a higher value.

I, like many others I feel, will pay a higher price for a slightly more rare model, in my case, since I, at 240 LBS tend to stay away from the smaller Sachs Pentons, like a limited production early introductory 79 KTM MX-6, a KRP Flat Tracker, a 78 GS-6 or a Red Tank 1977 MC5 or Blue 175 MC5, an early bike like a Yellow 73 or early 74 Red Tank 250 HS, or Mint 400. My reasoning is not because they are worth that much more, because once hard work and NOS parts and freshening up a running bike that runs but really needs those 35-40 year old crank seals, piston or rings and gaskets at the minimum, just to keep a running engine from sucking air and croaking, ruining a perfectly good engine and even just a quick touching up in best cases or repaint, shocks, steering head o-rings, fork seals, and decals in most cases, but because I want to have a nice bike to keep or at least enjoy until the next diamond in the rough catches my eye. I seem to almost always wind up selling something I would have liked to hang on to at least a while longer, just to afford the new acquisition, as my mood strikes me. The good new is, that my new Fiance' adamantly wants me to keep those bikes, and is helping me to manage the restorations in a more positive way and keep collecting my favorites!!!
I don't buy bikes with the intent of making a living or even a profit in fixing up or restoring them, it's the enjoyment of owning and seeing your finished bike come together with pride and joy that is hard to explain, and on occasion sharing that with a new owner of a prized possession. I have sold more bikes for 2/3 of what I had in them that I care to mention, given away frames and parts to Gary because I don't want to see/hear them calling at me to spend $ I don't have on building another from scratch bike, and I might pay 1/2 too much for the fond memories, but its hard to justify paying much over the generally found to be asking price for a model that is easy to find for $1,200 or less in better condition or $700-$800 in running condition, and even $2000 for one someone already completely refurbished and save yourself $1,200-$1,500 by doing so. Just my 2 cents...Mike

Good points Mike.  I don't collect much evidenced by me selling my Astrodome restored Berkshire to Pelicano Guano Motorsports for their museum because they offered quite a bit more than it was worth.  When I miss it I just get on their website and say hi.  This is perhaps a case of point of view and as the Indians said, "You don't really know till you walk a mile in someone elses moccassins.

Hey Dale ,respect POG opinon on bike pricing etc. I 'm the guy with 250 . The born date is June 1974 . Any way I live her in Clinton Township near Metro Beach and just thought I would give a shout out. Had a conversation on email this morning with Paul Danik about Hungry Creek 100 cup holder . A race the Pentons used to attend near my home town.
