Probably a 75 Mint 400, due to the lack of ribbed front forks, and utilizing a 78 up Torque pipe. Nice bike, I wonder if this is one Chicago Jerry built? Mike

I looked at this bike but it's a bit outside my price range & I wanted endure trim.
I'm looking at a bike now that has a similar pipe.
What is this '78 Torque pipe you refer to? - is that a brand or was there a choice of pipes in '78.
Thanks for your help.

Starting in possibly late 77, and used in most of 78-up KTM's with the exception of GS-6's, KTM introduced a "Torque pipe design" that has the larger expansion chamber above the cylinder vs the gradual enlarging tapered exhaust previously used by Penton/KTM for improved flow and power output. The Torque style pipe is just a reference on the pipe design and although not original for some bikes, it has been fitted to some earlier bikes with good results with some bracket modifications and in the case of 76-77 MC-5 bikes usually requires elimination of the Left Hand petcock because of clearance issues, or the use of an earlier (pre-76, or 78 MC-5 style tank) that has the petcock farther forward than on the Left Hand side of the 76-77 MC-5 tanks, which allows the petcock to clear the pipe. Most all of the Motoplat ignitions came with a lighting coil, so adding lights to convert to an Enduro is a simple procedure. Mike

Great information - thank you.
This is the set-up on the bike I'm going to
see this week - any ideas about this pipe?:

That is the same Torque style pipe used on 78 up bikes. If you look at the other side where the silencer end is & if it is similar to the other bike pictured, it would be 78 to early 80 pipe & if it has a separate silencer on a small stinger it would be late 80-81 pipe. It's hard to tell from the limited picture of the tank, but it looks like they have installed a 78 style tank painted orange so that the further forward petcock clears the pipe. Mike

Great info Mike-thanks.
Here is the picture of the right side of the pipe.
The current owner has grafted a repo stock silencer on the end.
Can't see exactly how he did it but it looks pretty good.

I don't know why anyone is pushing these bikes they see for sale elsewhere, if they are not yours, you don't know the seller, and you have not seen the bike in person ?? , especially if they're nothing special, but a half built race bike made up of misc parts from 4 different years and models. But if you're spending thousands of dollars buying a bike from a couple lousy pictures, go ahead, you deserve what you get.

Bawb, Because people are looking for something to ride would be my best answer.
You are correct that you really should know what you are looking at and who you are dealing with before pulling the buying trigger.  Helpful advice on what is correct or incorrect in the sellers description helps all of us in learning more about specific details.

Just saying if you want to lead a new Penton buyer/owner into finding their dream machine, I would hope you better know EXACTLY what you're leading them into. If someone's looking for a Penton, and relying on a respectful POG member's knowledge to help find a good one, I would not draw attention to each one on the market, but only the ones you had a personal connection to. That's just me though.

thrownchain

I posted the one I did because I found it on a site that most Penton people wouldn't really be on.

Dale, Please keep posting ANY penton/older KTM you find. The comments and wealth of information from the members is priceless for us just getting into the hobby. The 1979 250 I bought was just because I liked the bike. I had no real idea what I was getting. Ended up being very original and nice and I paid a bit too much for it but that is what I wanted. You are not forcing or leading anyone, just showing what is available and I really appreciate it.

I think he's asking $2300.00 now . Just conferred with him a few nights ago about model. I believe it a MC5 Toolsurfer
