Hi All,

My grandfather handed me down a '77 MC5 400, which I was able to bring back to life.  Along with the 400 was the motor from his '74 250 Harescrambler along with some assorted parts from both bikes.  I'm no expert on Pentons, so it's hard for me to tell which bike some of these parts belong on.  Please contact me with questions and I can take some pictures and work out a fair price with you.  Here's a summary:

'74 250 parts:

Cases are intact.  I did not split them to see what was inside, but they are not empty.  The stator and wiring are there.  The clutch basket, hub, and plates are there and look to be in very good shape (probably the best looking part of it).

Cylinder appears serviceable.  It will need bored due to some corrosion.

The head is in good shape except for a missing cooling fin.  It looks like it took a rock.

Foot pegs in decent shape

Full rear brake actuator assembly with good pads (no pad return spring though)

Rear brake lever

400 parts:

Complete Bing carburetor that looks to be in great shape.  I think my grandpa upgraded to a Lectron which is currently on the 400.

Other Parts (could be for 250 or 400):

Assorted kick start levers
Assorted foot pegs
Shift lever (tip appears pointed slightly forward but maybe that's correct)
Nice aluminum 52 tooth rear sprocket, teeth look great
Two rear axles (probably one for 250, one for 400)
One partial front axle assembly
Two different chain tensioners (not a pair)
Chain roller/guide assembly with spring
Chain break guard that surrounds the front sprocket

Thanks for your time.  Please let me know if you are interested in anything!

Dave

Could you please post the engine cases serial number, located directly behind the right hand front engine mount boss. Thanks, Mike

Mike,

Sorry about that.  The engine serial number is 54 30003010

454MRW

Thank you. I am assuming the full # is 4-54 30003010, or 4-54003010. It should be a stamped in number not a raised cast number  near the front  of the engine not near the back. A pic would be helpful, as the # you listed is more like the casting #. Hiw much are you asking including shipping to Illinois zip 62448 or Mid Ohio delivery. Mike

Mike, here is everything I could find.  I'm pretty sure the number supplied is the correct one.  I don't see a leading number next to the one I gave you.  Pics below!  I'll email you about pricing.

R192 is where the serial number is normally located on your case and in this instance that doesn't exist on this engine. there is no serial number. It may be, as it has been speculated that the R192 number is a repaired engine sold as an over the counter or replacement possibly, but there is no definite answer to why some engine do not have an actual serial number. The other numbers are casting numbers and each engine built near the same time would have those same casting numbers. My email is [email protected] I don't think the in-house mail is working as I haven't got a response back from Larry Perkins about his Mid-Ohio tickets. Mike

The R serial numbers were one of two things. Some were sent as race team replacements and some were sent as models to learn how to work on that motor.  One to take apart and learn the drill per se.  When I bought a bunch of stuff from Bobby Lucas that was JR Horne's there were several R numbered motors.

It's not a 1973 motor or early 74, it has the brace casted lob for motor support. ID numbers are above the motoplat and below the bottom fin

Sorry for the misinformation, all.  I edited the original post, but will clarify here:  The engine is off of a 1974 250 Harescrambler.  My Uncle verified this.

454MRW

After emailing Dave Ross about the R-series engine cases he spoke to his grandfather and this is what he had to say.
"I spoke with him yesterday and verified that those are replacement cases.  He said that the original ones were cracked from the factory, and the Penton shop had to order a replacement and install it before he could ride it, hence the "R" serial."
Evidently they are also used for replacement cases, and/or engines besides training engines. Mike

I'd like to thank the buyers so far for their cooperation in dealing with a rookie Penton owner and forum user!

Most of the engine is now sold, although I still have the cylinder.  Aside from the foot pegs off of the 400, everything pictured on the striped towel is still available.  Please let me know if I can help you out!
