The tank off my 76 MC 5 has had clear contact paper on it since is was about 2 months old.  I am currently trying to remove the paper  but much of the adhesive has remained on the tank.  How do I get it off?  I have tried "Goo Be Gone," without any success. What can I use that won't ruin the glass coating?

Perhaps a heat gun on low setting...keeping the heat moving...using a putty knife?

It was the only way to get worn 30 year old number plate stickers off of a Husky 430.

Goo Be Gone works well.

You might try 3M adhesive remover, from auto paint supply house.

Believe it or not, WD-40 can take adhesive goo  off. Spray it on and let it sit. They scrape at it with an old credit card or plastic putty knife using light pressure. It will come up, but not immediately and should not harm the finish.

Goo Be Gone won't touch it.  I will try to 3M remover; got to find it.  And I will try the WD-40.  Thanks for the input.  I will let you know how it works out....

If the contact paper has really been on the tank since it was new, the adhesive is kind of petrified. Any if the mentioned product will probably work, but will have to soak for a while to start breaking down the goo.Even gasoline{with NO alcohol) might do it. If you try WD-40, soak a rag with it and let it sit on a section of it for an hour and see what you get.

I have gotten the old adhesive off of MANY old Penton tanks that was left after original tank stickers were removed with Goo Be Gone.  So will disagree.  You do have to put it pn it for awhile to get it to break down.  It is not instant.3M adhesive remover works decent too but Never had much luck with WD 40.

Well I put some WD 40 on the tank and let it sit, and then let it sit some more....  nothing.  I will try to soak a rag with it and see.  Still haven't gotten the 3M remover.  Goo be Gone won't touch it...

I've not tried it, but for it's gravity and evaporation resistant properties, perhaps petroleum jelly and a couple of weeks next to the furnace?

James,

Try SEM Solve.  It's available at most any auto paint store.  It wont take them off in seconds, but if you soak a rag with a little and keep gently wiping the decals they come off.

Happy New Year, James - miss ya up here in the Northeast, hope those cockroaches aren't TOO big down there in Florida.  And hope you are enjoying your next life chapter.

You'll be happy (and not surprised?) to know I'm going to put a lightly ported Jackpiner top end (7 fin if you will) on my MC5 175 and set aside the 6 fin.   Haven't decided about carb, but leaning towards Bing if we can get it set up right.  I deserve some of the blame, but also really struggled with my Lectron set-up.

Let me know if you're gonna race White Lightning.  Might make the drive if I and drag some others along to keep me awake on the road.

Bob, be prepared to grind some head fins for pipe clearance. With a little work I fitted a 7 fin 175 engine into a 76 MC5 chassis, so it can be done. Mike

Thanks, Mike.  As you can guess, I've already commissioned Mr. Ellis to help me with the swap. He indicated I will actually need to use a 250 MC5 pipe with this set-up, not sure if that gets me out head fin grinding or not.

And Happy New Year to ya.  I've always appreciated your input and experience on this site.  Let me when you're ready to donate the KR racer to charity. [8D]
