Just bought a 74 250 this bike had a smaller tank and the rear fender loop doesn't have tabs to mount the rear fender it has a rubber mount to hold the fender on, The muffler is different to. It has a smaller opening  and is shaped differently than the one on my other 250 and  My Jackpiner. So my question  is there CMF bikes that came as a MX That had smaller tank and different exhaust.
Thanks for your help m

Yes on both accounts but MX tank was added many times and many exhausts were modified.

That said, the 74.5 enduro had the watermelon type tank and a chrome reverse cone end piece on pipe.  It was bigger around and is often referred to as the Bazooka pipe.  The mixer had the slimmer tank and a small pickle silencer.  The cone narrowing of the pipe is readily seen as it exits sidepanel as there is no shroud around it like the enduro.

If it's a true '74, it would only have one shock position and shorter travel. The missing rear frame loop sounds like it was cut off by someone trying to make it look like a later MC-5?? Only one frame available until the '76 model year, correct? Like Larry says, the tank and pipe are pretty inconsequential, I'm more curious about the frame and suspension.

Dan, I don't think he was saying frame loop qas missing just that the fender mount tabs were not on it and it had the metal/rubber center mount.  Makes me think it is a 74.5.

One way to tell if the bike originally came as an MC250 with the MX pipe and tank configuration is to look at the right side cover (if it still has the original). Where the exhaust cover slides under the edge of the seat it will be stamped MC250 in the fiberglass. I know that many of these bikes were distributed by Penton West where the MX version was favored by the West Coast riders, still have mine that I purchased in 1975.

Hope this helps - Cal

Thank you all for your input. I just looked at the side panel and I didn't see anything there the rear suspension is straight up and down as far as the shocks go there are three holes on the swing arm mount and then two holes at the shock top mount
I took some photos but haven't figured out how to post photos
