It is zinc with a little tin. Zinc alone will dull in 6 months, adding tin will keep things shinny.

Thanks - anything else come to mind that could go outing for zinc replate? front hub arm & anchor, rear brake adjust, they cleaned up ok but not sure on original finish.

Rich, just a few thoughts on zinc plating. I usually do all of the original hardware, bolts, nuts, axels, springs, foot pegs for my restorations. The front brake stay was originally nickel plated. Nickel plating is very expensive so I usually buff them out unless they are very corroded. Prep the parts using a wire wheel to remove the scale and crud. The standard acid bath prep that most platers use does not get all of the crud off. You will get much better parts back if you spend a little prep time up front.

Thanks Cal. Do you spec dull or shine zinc finish? I totally agree on the nickel items, the stay and hubs have polished up nicely. The wing-shaped brake adjuster nut is a casting and it too polished up with fine scotchbrite. On these items I am using a product called Everbrite to keep them looking that way - everbritecoatings.com. Finding the brass wire wheel better, softer results.

The plater I've been using for the last 7 or 8 bikes offers a clear zinc finish that gives you more of a shine. The guy I had used previously had a duller clear zinc finish.
I've found that a good prep also changes the look of the part giving you a brighter or shiny finish. Thanks for the tip on the brass wheel, I'll give it a try.
