Hi, I am new to this group and a first time KTM owner (I'm a avid
Hodaka VMX guy). Anyway I have been kinda looking for a enduro/trail
bike with better suspension and picked up a 1980 KTM 250 this last
Sat. Please look in the photo section under "Rad Randy" and see the
pictures I have posted. I have two questions right now.

First the gas tank appears to be aftermarket just because the gas cap
says "Clarke" on it and the shape appears to be more like the Penton
type with the knee indentations but it also has a indented stripe
(stripe is missing) area that goes down from about the gas cap area
and turns and goes forward. Has anyone seen a tank like this and
could it be original? If original, what stripe is to go there?

Second question, what model is this? I know its a 1980 for sure and a
250 but is it called something else like a GS or something? Frame
number is 00314867 and engine is 0-5424535

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

OOOPS! I guess I didn't get any pictures posted of the bike as a quick look it didn't look as easy to post pictures as the yahoo group sites I belong to. Any help on where or how to post the pictures would be helpful also. Thanks!
Randy (the new guy)

Randy,  We can't post pictures to this site (yet).  Post them to the yahoo site and then post the link here.

Hi Rad,

It sounds like you have a Clarke MC-5 replacement tank. It's shaped just like the Penton GS and MC5 tanks of the late 70's but is plastic instead of the original fiberglass. You can probably find stripes from one of the parts suppliers listed on the "Parts" page of this site.

I have this same style tank on my 77 Penton.

Does it look like this:

Clarke's homepage is here:

Go to store, then KTM to see the tank.

Post your frame serial number here so we can double check the year for you.

Good folks here. Be sure to read the thread here about the upcoming Harper's 100cc race. I think you might find it interesting ;)

Yep, thats the tank. I was told it is to look like a late 1970's machine. Another member wrote to tell me the bike is a 1980 GS 250, Thanks for all the help. By the way, I will be riding a "HODAKA" at the memorial day races. It's a '74 Orange Super Rat and its a fast one:)
