Was wondering if there are any Pogers currently running a PVL Ignition system on a ktm 250 motor and what do you think of the internal rotor compared to the motoplat external rotor set any help would be great Happy New Year to all.....

Hello" Yes" its like running an old internal rotor motoplat,though with a lot hotter spark and alot cleaner better bottom/mid and cleaner topend just not as much flywheel as original motoplat(external Rotor?What you will notice if you leave bike stock but don't change gearing is you may want to go 4-5 tooth bigger on back tocomplensate difference or just spend a little extra and get an new lighting coil (MUZ)type,buy a moose volt pack universal 12 volt system as lod motoplat was 6 volts change bulbs if you run lights ,I think a voltage regulator come with the muz talk to Dane L about it?He's the Chief when it comes to ignitions!;)

Wolf....,

   FYI, the MZ-B ignitions, are from a different company than the MUZ operation. That group is the new MZ motorcycle group while the MZ-B operation is a remnant of the original MZ company.

While we are on this topic could someone tell me why my new PVL won't start my 400. I get good sprk when grounding the spark plug to the cylinder. When I try to start the motor all I can get is a good pop and then nothing. After fiddling for weeks trying to find the problem I finally put the old ignition back on to see what would happen and it fired first kick. Somethings fishy. Thanks for any help. Gavin

Is the timing set correctly? When I first installed my MZB I boneheadedlly set the timing 2.4mm after TDC. It did what you describe happened to your bike. I hope this helps.

Gavin are you sure your not 180 out on the timing. I had that problem on Bill Cappel's Husky awhile back.

Well I remember putting the dial guage in the spark plug hole and then using the kick start lever to determine direction the crank turns, finding TDC then zeroing the dial guage and then turning the crank the opposite direction of travel to 3.0mm before TDC. That should have at least got the engine started? Then I tried PVL's suggestion of 2.1mm BTDC thinking that retarding the timming should make the fresh top end a little easier to start. Still no luck? I guess I should send it to Dain and have it tested? Gavin

..........Gavin,I had the same problem with many other 500 class makes,same thing,hard to start,when it is running very fussy about jetting. My investigation turned up the lack of low speed/high speed source coils,PVL has only a source coil. What happens is on the big engines kicking them quick enough to generate spark to light is a problem at best. I refuse to install or fiddle with 500 class engines using them for the reasons mentioned above. Small bores do not exibit these problems as they do not pose the low speed kicking problem hence more spark to light the engine..............................

Good morning, all;
Speaking of ignition timing, can anyone recommend a good quality dial indicator set-up? The last one I had, while not cheap, wasn't exactly first-class and I want to install the MZ-B on my 250 correctly.[:p]

Keithuu,

   The only one that I've been able to find that will do all of the machinery I need to work on, is one that Snap On sells. The model number  of the one that I have is GA555M. And it wasn't inexpensive either, but it is high quality.

I've put PVLs on about 5 or 6 Pentons from 125cc to the Mint 400s. They are great. For woods racing I have needed to put the 17oz flywheel weight on them or else I would stall the engine every now and then upon hard braking. The 400s need the flywheel weight for any kind of racing. My Piner is the only motoplat holdout that I have. After 5 years of racing it, it still has a great spark and I can run the lights for the ISDT reuion rides. When it goes out, it'll be an MZ-B for me.
