Very very cool old pics and nice slideshow Paul! Somewhat surprised to see the absence of speedos or odometers during the trials, like on Carl Cranke's bike (although the screwdriver through the steering stem is a nice touch).

I suppose if hustling to the next check with time to spare is no problem, they didn't worry about how many more miles they needed to cover before their minute came up.

I believe the ISDT in Dalton was '73.

I know one Penton bike that had a speedometer in the
73 ISDT. Mine and I think it was the only one.  It served its'
purpose and saved my Gold medal.

Ron, Thomas, et al - I have convinced Mr. Wilford (aka "The Quiet Man"), to at least submit to some interviews, during which time I hope to draw out some of the amazing experiences and stories that he carries around within him.  I'm a bit behind on my intentions to do so, but look for some material from Doug, hopefully in the not too distant future.  If you are ever lucky enough to be around Doug when he offers up a story - listen carefully!  You'll sure to hear some amazing stuff.  Also, we did capture some stories from Doug, including recollections about his days aboard the Penton Cycleliner, for an upcoming video.  Stay tuned!
