Hey Yall, does anyone in POGville have a chain tensioner and guide for a 1978 MC5 250. That is the only part that was missing on my bike and I would rather not ride  a whole lot withoutit and have no idea what it looks like. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, TooTallPaul, Charlotte NC

Paul,
Quite some time ago, I bought a chain roller assembly, part # 55.03.052.044 that bolts to the right side of the engine and the rear engine mount bolt goes through it from Al Buehner. Also part # 51.07.066.400, 51.07.066.200, or 51.07.066.300 chain guard block that bolts onto the rear brake anchor rod. There is no actual chain tensioner as such, only the roller assembly and the guide. You might give Al a call to see if has any left. The chain roller assembly was used sometime after 1976 to my knowledge, and before that the part was referred to as a spacer with no roller assembly involved. Mike

Keep in mind that if running a 530 chain, an o-ring chain will not fit through the chain roller assembly. You might want to pick up a chassis manual from Al and the previous engine manual, which is a Godsend when identifying parts. Mike

Paul,
I got my lower chain guide block and front lower chain roller from Al Buehner. Check Rob at http://www.4robs.com.au/index.html the front swingarm slider. As stated, there is no real tensioner on the 1978 MC5, just a path for the chain to slap around on.

Cheers,
Marko

Hey, thanks you guys. Its hrad to tell when parts are missing. I just assumed it was a tensioner. Mike, The 250 hare scrambler is coming along. You wont recognize it by next year. What is the story with that bike? Did it just sit for a long time? It seems to run really good. Take care, Paul

Paul,
I put a bid in on a 76 MC5 125 from a guy in AR when I was down at Ron Carbaughs' delivering a bike and a roller that he had delivered to my space at Mid Ohio last year, and after being outbid by one bid on the 125, the seller backed out and I was offered the 125 for my bid. I was on the road back when the auction ended and had left my cell ph. # with the seller. When he contacted me to offer me the 125 at my bid price, he mentioned a red tank 250 with lights on it for a package deal, which I took. He never even mentioned having the 250 running, so I figured it needed a lot of work, and to my surprise after putting gas and trans fluid in it, it fired up, and after a quick carb cleaning, and a new UNI air filter, I rode it around for several months, albeit with the clutch slipping at middle RPM's and upward. It should make a great bike once the swingarm bearings are replaced. It ran great for me. I even took it as a backup bike for the ISDTRR last year and after being in the rain for 3 days, it fired right up! I am glad it has found a good home! Mike

Hey Mike, Yeah, the 250 has got a home. Been piddling around. I think the best move was to try another carb. She started first kick so that was my answer so far. That bing was making me mad. Got some pipe mounts and a good silencer, engine case guard. speedo and some little things. Rod is charging the zooks I had for it. When she is running good I will give her some paint and bring her out for a blessing. I did not find any reason to tear the engine apart. Take care and talk with ya soon, TTPaul

Paul,
That's kind of funny, I never had any problem with the carb. I would hold the tickler down for 3-4 seconds and it would start on the 2nd or 3rd kick...always, and ran clean and crisp after it warmed up a bit. What kind of problems did you have with the carb. I could use it on another bike of mine if you want to part with it. Mike
