Motor case color

Hi guys,

I am looking to paint the motor cases on my 1976 MC-5 250.  Does anyone have a good color to use?  Thanks!

I personally like the Duplicolor DE1650 500° Ceramic Engine Enamel followed by a 2-3 light coats of Duplicolor DE1636 500° Ceramic Engine Enamel clear coat, applied while the base color is still slightly tacky. It is important to follow the directions closely, as this paint is very sensitive to humidity while applying. It is resisant to gas and oil. I have also used the DE1615 which is more of a shiny aluminum color for some components, like repainting rusty or dull kick start or shift levers. Mike

Mike,

Do you use this on the cases, cylinder and head, or all three?

I usually only dust the cylinder and head, depending on the original condition, just enough to protect it, since it is less prone to erosion like the magnesium cases. I have a bead blasting cabinet that I put plastic media in to blast the cases and wash them down thoroughly with Walmart spray carb cleaner, drying and bringing the cases up to room temperature prior to painting. In some cases, I will completely mask off the cylinder from the cases on complete engines to avoid painting the cylinder and vibration rubbers if the cylinder fins are in very good condtion. I have been painting the KTM oval indentations with a fine paint brush and Ford Engine blue because of lack of the correct color blue so far. Mike

Thanks for the info.  Now, where do you buy this paint?  Also, any suggestions on the silver for the frame?

Haven't found too many hobby stores with Tamiya paint selections, but easy to find on-line if searching under hobby-tamiya. 4oz spray cans. I used HobbyUSA I recall.

For frame paint, many have said PJ1 KTM silver is very close. I tried it and thought it looked much too flat. I topped it with a light coat of PJ1 KTM (or Yamaha) silver barrel paint (hi-temp), which has a nice light metallic to it. Then sprayed a clear coat. I believe it looks great for '73-'76 restorations.

I think that the PJ-1 KTM Silver frame paint has been discontinued and is no longer available, according to previous posts on frame paint. I actually use the same Duplicolor paint for the frame. My local NAPA automotive store carries the Duplicolor line, and there are a lot of on-line places to purchase it. Mike

I just found all four Duplicolor paints (1650, 1636, 1615,1612) at the local Pep Boys, 4.49 ea. I'm hoping it's more fuel resistant than PJ1. The first time I tickled the Bing the PJ1 curdled and slid off the engine cases. Thought this might help others find the Duplicoler easier. Wildman
