Penton Talk / Re: Rear Hub question

@Paul Danik, Just the hub would be fine. The crack has been welded and it looks like they welded the sprocket carrier also. It's ugly!

Penton Talk / Rear Hub question
March 21, 2022, 09:14:58 PM
Hello all,

I belonged to the POG previously...I'm not sure how I let my membership lapse but I'm back. I just picked up a '74 Jackpiner, from the frame number it was made in February of '74.

I read the Tech Tips on rear hubs and as I understand it the same hub was used on the '74 250 as the 175? The Jackpiner I just bought has a cracked rear hub that has a bad-looking weld job. I am searching for a replacement.

Got my petcocks installed and today  UPS brought my Bing parts. I fired her up and got to do a couple of laps in the yard...first true ride on this bike since 1978!
A couple more minor tweaks and I'll be ready for a longer ride...

Thanks Richard, I thought they were Marzocchi but wasn't sure.  I received my new petcocks and installed them...It ought to be getting enough fuel now! Just waiting for my bing parts then hopefully a little test ride.

Thanks ChicagoJerry, I'll check that out. I'm also watching e-bay and others to see if I can find a better set. Is there any way to identify whether the forks are Ceriani or Marzocchi? I can't find any markings....

Penton Talk / More Mint 400 questions

Thanks for the reply Thom. I  soaked the carb well in carb cleaner, I am thinking the float is a big part of the problem. I also noticed the float needle is spring loaded and according to manual I have it should not be depressed when the carb is inverted while checking float height. Mine is definitely being depressed. Maybe the float is too heavy from many years of soaking up gas while it sat?

I would rather keep it original. I am going to try the full rebuild kit from http://www.bingcarburetor.com/

The other I will have to replace are the petcocks, I tried cleaning them but don't think they are flowing enough fuel...they also allow a little fuel through when closed.

The brief time it ran I was able to ride it in the yard in first and second gears...I forgot how much power the old girl has!

WOW, What a shock...I just got back to this forum after being away for several years. Dane's name was one of the first I knew when I got involved in dirt bikes.

Wanted / For Sale / Frame for '76 Penton 125

454MRW,

I had this on e bay back in March and you started a thread about it...here is your orignal post.

There is a Penton frame on eBay that has a frame number of 607 91765 that only appears to have one position for the upper shock mount. I thought the 76 would have the dual position upper shock mounting like the '75. I am assuming from the frame number that this is a July 76 frame for a 250-400, but it does not have the GS type backbone, or a 550 MC5 frame number. It looks just like my early (311) 74 Harescrambler frame. Can anyone shed some light on the frame application.
