The number that you have listed for the engine number is actually the casting number for the engine not the engine ID number. the actual engine ID number is located above the ignition cover on the right hand side of the engine just below the cylinder fins by the front engine mount bolt. Hopefully your engine number will be starting with 4-55 or 5-55 for a 400 engine.

Penton Talk / MC5 Airbox Cover
May 23, 2020, 09:53:21 AM
Gary Ellis sent me pictures of a rubber flap that is pictured in the chassis manual and held in place by those same mentioned straps on one of his MC5's. I will get pics of the plastic one when I get out to the shop in a little while. I wonder if the plastic one replaced the rubber one as a better functional piece, and maybe even carried over into the 78 MC5 which had a plastic air box. Jeffrey please contact me for your address to send the side cover if you want it, I'll send some pictures. 618-553-1346

Penton Talk / MC5 Airbox Cover

Yes, the MC5 had a top shield pictured in the chassis manual. The GS6 had a boot that connected the airbox to the base of the frame backbone and sealed it off in that area, but the MC5 had a deflector that kept debris out of the top opening ftom the looks of it. I believe the foam helped to keep dust away from the top of the inlet area, as it sealed the seat around the top frame rails from 3 sides.
Most of those top shields were either missing or broken on the MC5's I have owned, and it wasn't until I spotted the NOS one on eBay that I realized what the full piece looked like in place. Its that same bluish-gray color like some of the fender shields.

There is actually a stock plastic piece that curves over the top and is held in place by perforated zip tie like attachments to the frame. It acts simply as a deflector. I bought an NOS one a while back for a project, I could take pictures of it tomorrow and send them to you if you give me your phone number or email address.
There was also a cover for the side opening that was held in place by a rubber band. The only one of those that I have has had numerous holes drilled into it for more airflow which just defeats the purpose of when it is used for water crossings. Cell. 618-553-1346

Penton Talk / Need bike picked up

If that's the only bike to be picked up along the trip, cost including tolls would be $275. Mike 618-553-1346

In May of 1984 I bought a new Honda 700 shadow. It was so hot that month that I could not ride it for more than a little while before it was like being in a sauna. Once the weather cooled down a little more I found out that the riding position was too cramped for me @ 6'2", and I could only ride the bike for a day before I would want to be away from it for several days. I decided to trade it in on a shiny New Black 84 V65. My first ride was riding on the back of my father's Honda 650 to the dealership where I'd left my 700 shadow while they prepped the V65. unfortunately that first ride was short-lived as about two miles from the dealership the gauges showed that the bike was overheating, so we turned around and took it back to the dealership and as it turned out they replaced a defective temperature sensor. the bike turned out to be very comfortable and I rode it everywhere, for great distances and long periods of time without any fatigue. Later after I got used to riding it around on one wheel in 3rd gear way too fast, I would almost always run the bike up to 160 miles per hour + once it was warmed up on the way toward town, and on the way home before putting it up for the day. This became quite a ritual until a couple years later the bike started to develop a shudder from the front wheel, either from wear, or out of balance, but if you could keep your nerve up and pass the 120 mile per hour mark, it would smooth out and the rest of the way to 160 + was smooth. This was about the time that they passed the law requiring insurance on all vehicles. Well, insurance on a high-performance V65 was $1,200 a year, and that was a little out of my price range so I decided to sell it. But before doing so I had to take it out a few more times, until the last time which I only made it to about 130 miles per hour before the bars started to tank slap uncontrollably. I quickly applied just the rear brake and slowed it down to legal speeds and headed home where I parked it then sold it a couple weeks later, telling the new owner to not ride it until he replace the front tire and had the bearings checked etc. If I still had it I wouldn't be around I am sure. Some things should just be put in the past. Lol

Wanted / For Sale / WTB 14mm Kick Start Lever
May 15, 2020, 08:31:31 PM
Just to make sure I wasn't slipping from old age, I looked up the non available kickstarter's on Al's site and sure enough 125 and 175 all have 14mm spline shafts and the 250-400 have 17mm, with the exception of some 73 black case 250's having 14mm. Just think how small a 12mm Marzocchi shock shaft is for comparison.

I believe all 125/175's are 14mm, the 250/400's are 17mm.
It might be that some early 73 250s had the 14mm.

Which town? I was just in Maryland last weekend and had the pipe in my vehicle. I do bike transports and go out to Fallston Maryland quite often to a friend of mine that restores Vintage RM Suzuki's.
