Wanted / For Sale / WTB 1977 GS6 175 exhaust
April 27, 2020, 10:26:54 AM
Thanks for quick replies.  I knew about the Italian reproductions, very nice, and may have to bite the bullet and do that.

My pipe is usable just the rear section has been molested over the years and looks nothing like a Penton pipe any more.

I was hoping to at least find the usable rear section and then weld them together (behind the number plate),  and fabricate factory type mounts as needed.

Penton Talk / Lectron help needed
July 25, 2012, 12:52:39 PM
Some success, with the carb and reducing the bog/flooding.

First thanks Jeff D and Gary.

I spoke to Helmut "speedy" Clausing, who is a really nice guy, and very interesting to talk to about most anything, including Lectron carbs.

He had a "separation" gasket that was developed to stop flooding on lectron carbs on road race bikes, this condition usually happened under heavy braking like at Daytona.  He described this gasket to me and I made one and installed on the 175 GS6  before I left for Mid Ohio.

I had no issues like last year,  and raced the HS and MX. I lowered the float level as in the picture on the link above.   I also made sure to to turn off the petcocks a few seconds (like 30) before I killed the engine and always started the bike with the petcocks off.

I did buy a gasket from Helmut ($7.95) which I had shipped to a relatives house in Lexington OH just in case.  I did not install it since it is a pain to get the carb off the bike, and my home made version seemed to help. This gasket acts like a baffle and reduces the fuel from sloshing forward and flooding the carb/engine.

He also said we should find a angled rubber boot to go between the cylinder and and carb.  I have not found one but something like what is on a 70's era Honda 4 cylinder .... if the diameters are correct... will let you know when i find one or if someone knows of a boot that will work, please let us know.

Helmut did say,  and Jack Penton confirmed from his own GS6 250, that we should do ourselves a favor and buy a modern Lectron and all of our issues will go away.

Hope this helps.

Penton Talk / Little Penton Project
August 01, 2011, 11:20:54 PM
Sorry the pictures will not post,  I read every thread I could find,  and none of the directions for attaching photos worked for me. (I use shutterfly) I hope you all can at least link over to see the bike.

I have WAY to much time in this thing :)  I bought this GT80 from Paul Danik at the York swap meet several years ago.  I started the project last winter. Pete you were very close, it is mostly 1974 Yamaha GT 80.

I hand hammered and formed the stock GT80 tank and then used some steel based epoxy body filler to add the accent lines.  I used aluminum sheet to form the left side panel/number plate, and the front and right side number plates. I had to weld tabs on the frame for mounting.

I bought aluminum fenders at VMD the last couple of years and polished them.  My son hand cut the front fender brace out of an anodized sheet I had laying my scrap bin.  I used the same pattern for the tail light rubber that was given to me for my original 1973 Jackpiner. The tail light is a clearance light.

The front head light is a Yamaha IT175 light using GT80 mounts, also found at VMD.  We ground and polished the "yamaha" out of the lens cover.

I ground the "Yamaha" off the engine cases, then powder coated them. I made a KTM stencil and sand blasted the logo into the cases.  I made a seat foam extension to make the back of the stock seat round to better match the Penton,  had a cover made, then stenciled Penton logo on the back.  (thanks Randy Kirkabride). I also added a front lip/stone guard to the skid plate.

I formed an exhaust pipe extension to go around the shock and fabricated the exhaust tip to match the big Pentons. The heat shield is the original shield from my Jackpiner restoration.

Topped it off with a genuine Penton gas cap. Everything on the bike was painted, polished, or powder coated.

Penton Racing Talk / VMD Hare scramble question

Thanks for the input on the hand guards,  he will have to pick his poison... I use hand guards on everything, thinking about putting them on the tractor:)
We can not get there until late Thursday maybe very early Friday, so we will have to be in the grassy area.

I will let you know soon if we need support.  We plan on going Thursday afternoon and heading 64 west, then north.

Thanks for keeping in touch!

Hey Rob I missed your post back in Feb.  I live in Waynesboro VA. and we may need some extra space.  With the fuel price scare, I have been elected to bring my truck and trailer... my other "friends" will drive their car .... I may run out of room for all of the race bikes and pit bikes, and god forbid if a golf cart must come also.   My trailer is enclosed so if you have something you want inside, especially if it is bad weather, maybe we can swap a few places.

We tend to go 64 west through WV.

Thanks Larry for the info.  I will look for the some active 2010 links for the rest of the rules.  Tires were our concern for now..... looking forward to July!

Penton Talk / Six days frame color
September 06, 2009, 08:53:54 AM
Unfortunately they do not make the paint anymore ... it was great!  I am still searching for the next closest thing, I am hoping Dupli color wheel paint in silver (and clear coat) will be close.  I just have not had a chance to spray any and check against my Jackpiner frame with PJ1 on it.
