Al B. was very helpful in having most of the parts I needed and he even had a new seat cover made to fit the later Penton's / early KTM's. I also thank Tom Brosius, Kip Kern, Barry Higgins, Forest Stahl and Rob at OZKTM for their technical help, machine shop services and parts.

Its been fun rebuilding the bike, but next time, I'm just going to buy an old beater and ride the dang wheels off of it.

I knew that the price would appear steep compared to other similar year and size bikes. I figure that the like new condition and the number of new / NOS parts would make the difference. I'll eventually place it on Ebay, someone from another country that has a strong currency compared to ours will jump on it. Thats my hope at least. Otherwise, it will continue to reside in my bedroom (I'm already divorced).

If someone can help a dummy like me understand how to place pictures in this posting, I'd attach them for everyone to see the bike. Thanks.

I think I still have a skidplate for a 78 MC5. I believe it might work for you. Send me a note on my email address: [email protected]. Thanks.

Penton Talk / MC5 Chain tensioner
October 18, 2007, 02:09:47 PM
Paul,
I got my lower chain guide block and front lower chain roller from Al Buehner. Check Rob at http://www.4robs.com.au/index.html the front swingarm slider. As stated, there is no real tensioner on the 1978 MC5, just a path for the chain to slap around on.

Cheers,
Marko

Penton Talk / 78 KTM 400 MC5 Transmission Enigma

Eureka! The shift forks were good. The problem was a reversed 6th mainshaft gear. Shifts through all 6 gears like "butta". Thanks to everyone for their helpful comments. :D

Hi. I'm in process of purchasing a 199?? KTM500. It's water cooled, single shock suspension and upside down forks. I'll figure out the year soon but I know that I'll need a piston and possibly a cylinder sleeve. Other than EBay. is there a source for cylinder sleeve and piston for these bikes? Thanks. [8D]

Wanted / For Sale / Wanted: KTM 400 MC5 Kickstand
February 05, 2008, 01:23:49 PM
Need a kickstand for my nearly complete 1978 KTM 400 MC5. I was sure I had one in my garage, but it didn't jump out and bite me when I was looking for it. Not sure, but maybe a late model Penton 400 might work. Thanks.  :)
