Penton Talk / Drill Bits
August 26, 2020, 09:46:24 AM
I'm a retired machinist but still do some work in my garage machine shop. Good sharp drill bits are necessary to do good work. I bought one of these listed below and for not much money it works great. Needs to be mounted to your bench grinder and sharpens bits up to 3/4 inch. A little learning curve to using it, but does a great job. Much easier than sharpening by hand.

Penton Talk / Making cone pipe?
March 03, 2013, 05:58:07 PM
Go to "www.conelayout.com" and download their software program. Free to use for 21 days but then you have to purchase it. Just put in the cone diameter of each end, the angle of each end and the length and the program will draw it out for you to print as a template or the results can be transfered to autocad. Even prints the pattern over multiple sheets of paper from a regular printer. I used it to fabricate the whole back half of the mx pipe on my 1975 250 penton and it worked great. Alan :)

Penton Talk / Fiberglass Tank/Ethanol Gas
August 05, 2010, 08:54:31 PM
I posted a month or so ago that Kwik Fill gas, available in Pennsylvania, didn't contain any ethanol but that has changed in the last few weeks. Hope I didn't mis-inform anyone.

Penton Talk / Fiberglass Tank/Ethanol Gas

For anyone from Pennsylvania, Kwik Fill stations don't have ethanol in their gas as of yet. I don't know if they're in any neighboring states or not.

Here's an update on my progress. Tried the enduro pipe with no change to the crappy low end. Pulled the carb again and the needle looked ok but the needle jet did look worn. Decided to make a new needle jet on my lathe but had no idea of the original size of the hole in the jet. I measured the needle toward the top and made the new needle jet slightly larger than the needle. First try was starving for fuel so I opened the hole up a little further and tried it again. It's running pretty good now with the needle clip in the center position, so I think a little fine tuning of the needle position should have it running great. I'll post an update and some photos of my restoration in the near future. Thanks to all that replied with help.  Alan

Penton Talk / Help needed with bogging 1975 250 HS
April 04, 2010, 09:41:53 AM
Thanks to everyone for all of the ideas. I think I'll first try my enduro pipe on it. If that doesn't work I'll try a new float, float needle and new needle and needle jet. When I pulled the left side panel and air filter to help hold the airbox to carb boot in place, when reinstalling the carb, there was some fuel that dripped out, so I'm thinking that the float might be saturated causing the over rich mixture at lower speeds. Thanks again for all the help.

Penton Talk / racing gas
November 28, 2009, 08:27:09 PM
For those riders in or near Pennsylvania, I'm told that "Quick Fill" gas doesn't contain any alcohol yet. I haven't personally checked it out cause I'm still in the restoration process of my first Penton in about 30 years.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't see them listed on Al's web site but he still may have them. I have a lot of other things to order from him anyway.

Penton Talk / Keeping Track
July 30, 2014, 09:49:06 PM
I'm not a regular on this forum, but being a former Penton dealer and still owning a 250 Harescrambler, I do check it out about once a month. I've often wondered why the original "Keeping Track" magazines are not available to view on the site. Lots of good info and tech tips in those. I still have all of mine from 1974 on. Maybe copy write issues?:)

Penton Talk / Help needed with bogging 1975 250 HS
April 02, 2010, 08:35:36 PM
Just finished restoring this 250 and I can't get it to run cleanly off the bottom or lower mid range. New crank bearings and seals, fresh rings, stock bing with stock jetting and carb is spotless inside. Motoplat and coil both just rebuilt by Vance Smith. Starts easily and runs great on top end but seems to be loading up badly at lower speeds. I can't lug this bike at all and end up downshifting and pulling in the clutch and revving the motor up to keep it going. Deck height and timing are set correctly, new air filter, and I'm out of ideas. My kids bought me this bike for Christmas 2008 and I've just finished getting it back together. I'd hoped to ride it today with some friends but couldn't get it to run well enough. I had to repair the stock mx exhaust but I rebuilt it as close to original as possible. I do have a good enduro pipe I can try. Any ideas???

Wanted / For Sale / 250 Rebuild question
February 01, 2010, 09:10:46 PM
I'm rebuilding my 1975, 250 motor and need to know if there is a shim between the clutch side crankshaft seal and the outer crankshaft bearing. I still have the original dealer parts manuals and they don't show that shim. It's probably been close to 30 years since I rebuilt one and I just don't remember. The shim was there when I disassembled it. Thanks in advance.  Alan Mason

Wanted / For Sale / Elko Rings Needed
May 28, 2009, 10:31:07 PM
Anyone have a new set of Elko rings for a STD. 250 piston (71.0 mm), for a 1974 250 Harescrambler I'm rebuilding? I'm new to this forum but not new to Pentons. I owned a Penton dealership in Clearfield, Pa. back in the mid seventies. My kids bought this bike for me for Christmas and I've got a lot of work ahead of me. This bike was one that I sold back in 1975.
