Wanted / For Sale / 1971 Steel Tanker F/S on eBay
March 07, 2014, 07:52:55 PM
The guy I use puts it in his oven and blasts it immediately when he removes it from the oven. He prefers it over blasting paint lol. I'm not bitting I told him I will stick to paint ;)

Powder coating will come off just like paint. My blasting guy I use has no issues what so ever to blast it off.

Penton Talk / Restoring V5301
March 05, 2014, 04:56:26 PM
This is a perfect example of a motorcycle that is being restored by someone who has no idea what they are doing. The bike should be immediately sent to me for disposal before any other innocent bystanders become horrified by such a Obama-ination :D

Terrible job;)

I will make sure it never ever see's the public's eye again (without me on it anyways).

I am so jealous of these old beauties. You have a great machine that I would be very proud to own.

Penton Talk / Bent kick starter
February 26, 2014, 06:25:35 PM
Although I have nothing to do with either Al's or the originals I suspect the problem with Al's repops is two fold. I play in this stuff in my professional life, I am a industrial engineer. The originals, at least on my MC5 400 are made from forgings. I doubt the repops are.The act of making a forging in itself makes a part resistant to bending because the grains of the part are aligned during the forging process. This is one of the main points of pursuing a forging vs. a casting or bar stock. Next I don't believe the tempering was performed on the new versions. For example take a flat spring. When the spring steel heated red-orange and let to air cool you can bend it into any shape you desire. THis is how the spring is shaped. If you take the same spring steel and heat it again and immediately quench it in water it will no longer bend but instead break. It is only when you heat the spring again after quenching to 300ish degrees does the tempering take hold and the spring demonstrate it's ability to return to the shape it originally had. This is no different. If you know the material the kickers were made from and it is able to be tempered the kickers would flex as designed and return to the original shape. I suspect this to be the issue. Hardness of material has nothing to do with bending other than it would break instead of bending.

Al I have a binder full of "if only I had a time machine" moments. Oh well this is how we all learn.

OK I wanted to know about the gas tank on this bike but didn't want to put the effort to post the picture. Why is there a  extra hole in the top of the gas tank? Newbie I know lol

Penton Talk / Swinging arm bearings
February 13, 2014, 11:18:18 AM
I just did this... get a carbide burr for a die grinder and its a snap. Grind a pie out of the race get under it with a chisel and its out. Because I am a perfectionist if you grind a little to far you can work some JB wend into the low areas and once dry work it with a sanding drum on a dremel. Mine you could never tell I butchered it unless I told you. It does not matter if you don't fill it in, i am just a sucker to details.

I got them out with a carbide grinding burr. Easy as pie once I knew where to stop. My bearings were a single unit on each side that were double row wide, not two separate units stacked side by side. I assume this is no longer available? I am finally ready for blast and primer.

Penton Talk / Bing 27 choke plunger
November 20, 2013, 02:15:58 PM
In general a plunger type choke is not a choke at all. It in fact is a valve that actually opens a additional port that allows extra fuel to flow into the air/fuel mixture. With this in mind you are actually enriching the fuel/air mixture not "choking" the fuel system as normally done on a butterfly type of carburetor.
