Yes, It's a splash guard and is fitted just forward of the air box on the frame rails.

It's sheet plastic about the thickness of a credit card. If anyone needs a pattern I can trace it and mail it.

Jeff

If I remember correctly DC makes a tank skin for the 79 smaller MX tank but not the larger GS

Hey David,

What is that white flap inside the box for?  Is that to divert any water coming in from the top off the filter?

Hi-Point air box

James,

Yes you are correct ......The air opening is on the top back side of the box and there is a trimmed flap fitted between the opening and filter diverting the air down into the bottom of the box shielding the filter form directly ingesting debris / water or such.

Take care

apologies for the delayed response, it was a working 3 day weekend

That is pretty cool Dave!  Nice looking bike....  Where are your side panels???

Unfortunately no side covers, though came kitted with Hi-point air box, Girling reservoir shocks and Preston fenders along with a Mikuni carb. Just recently started piddling on it with the intent to refurbish it a bit, hopefully we can do it some justice.

Take care

A bit late but just noticed this.......

Andy, the 175 motor you have or had #9-5210974, well by chance I've got the next one in sequence #9-5210975 / date clock reads on the case reads 78-9,

Here is a photo as was when I obtained it. Frame # 855-10664, The frame has been painted red, but it was originally orange and suspect it's late 78 early 79 (MC-5 / MX-6) came with a 78 title.

Take care
Dave

Penton Talk / what year is my KTM?
December 31, 2014, 08:00:57 AM
Picked this 175 up the other year and had the notion it was a MC-5, however after reading the above I'm wondering if this would be a MX-6 ? VIN# 855-10664

Paul,

Figuring on the White Lighting in Chester SC come March, and had ideas of Barber, but the nieces wedding has come-up on that weekend,,,,,So it looks like Mid-Ohio in July might be put on the schedule, never been to Ohio which would make it all the more reason to venture the trip.

Thanks for the welcome

Hi Folks,
An introduction of sorts  ....... In the late 70's, early 80's dabbled a bit in cross country's', enduro's , down here in the southeast, SETRA circuit , Denver 100,  local CC and a qualifier over in Tellico Tenn., never was a top contender, but did pull off a win at a Taylorsville CC and a surprising bronze at Tellico in the non-intent 250 class.

Mostly road on a couple of Yam IT's and could afford only to lust after the Penton's / Huskys, though eventually worked up enough credit to where me and the bank purchased one of them gleaming orange/white 250 GS80's.......oooohhhh what a machine!!!  In truth will say it was too much race bike for a short guy of 5'2"/ 120 lbs, but once pointed in the general direction I was looking to go it would get it done in hurry and a blast for general trail riding at the time.

Eventually the daughters came to be and had two close riding buds' that wound up with knee surgeries so figured it was time to give it up for a bit........ Though now that some time has passed and the girls/ young ladies out on their own figured to revive an idle threat posed to the wife back then, "once I get these little darling's raised up I'm going back super senior class!":D

I haven't quite got me a true penton as of yet, though I'm trending that way with a 79 GS 250 that's  a  rider and what appears to be a 78 175 MC-5 that needs some sorting, which I hope to give some attention to in the near future. For now want to thank ya'll for allowing this new member a place to school-up and refresh on the workings of his early KTM/Penton.

Happy New year
