Penton Talk / clutch problem need input
July 27, 2014, 03:58:30 PM
The Sachs clutch has got me out of alot of turns where the trans would have let me down. Maybe that explains why my cable broke at Chrome. I haven't broken a pressure plate yet.

No doubt yours is taking even more abuse in the 100 expert class.

Where is that creek bottom? I might have to stop on the way to Big K and see what else is in there. great job. Are you going to Big K to ride some trials?

Penton Talk / clutch problem need input
July 26, 2014, 07:35:49 PM
Hey Mickey,

I have always set mine up on the loose side by feel and have never had the snap ring groove chip or round off. My gut feeling each time I install the clip is that the groove is pretty shallow and the clip might pop off at any time, but it never has. I have gone through a few bushings and 1 gear that had chipped teeth. Originally my clutch had a steel bushing that transferred metal onto the shaft but I was able to file it off. I run Al's bronze bushings.

That said I am running a 6A motor in the Int. class and don't have to beat Vigil! But I do abuse the clutch to avoid unnecessary shifting. It's amazing what those little clutches will take.

Ditto on what everyone says about the sharp side of the snap ring away from the load. That goes for any snap ring. Or C clip, whatever you call it.

See ya at Big K!

Penton Talk / Which Rim?
July 20, 2014, 10:28:13 AM
I put new Takasago Excel rims and Buchanan spokes on my '74 HS 250. They work great, but if I had it to do again I would spend a few extra bucks and go with Sun. I think they're more correct on Pentons and are made in the USA.

I have an original set of wheels with Suns that I took off a '76 MC5 400  carcass and put on my '74 1/2 HS 250. Of course if you have good rims on hand and don't have to buy new, you can just go with whichever set are in the best condition.

Penton Talk / Fork oil
July 06, 2014, 02:13:59 PM
I think any good quality oil should be fine. I use 10w Pro Honda but Bel Ray is great too. I have been buying seals from //www.speedandsport.com
Installed them in 2 sets of Cerianis and 1 set of Betors, so far no leaks.

Maybe your bikes have been sitting too long Derek- it's time to take them out for a ride!

Penton Talk / Bing Pilot Jet question
July 04, 2014, 10:20:03 AM
Hi Larry,

I don't know how that o-ring got in there, but I've never seen one on a pilot jet, Bing or otherwise. I think the metal to metal contact between the jet and carb body provides the seal. If there was damage or a porous casting on the carb body that could be an issue but probably would not be fixable with an o-ring. I would install Al's new jet and see how she runs.

Penton Talk / 400 Penton Exhaust Modifications
June 27, 2014, 12:30:48 AM
Hey Dan,

I race mx on that 250 HS with the Ace pipe so I'm looking for a good midrange to top end hit to keep up with the CZ's Hooskas and Maicos. If I was riding in the woods the pipe with the flat, mellow power would be a better choice, especially with the added power of a 400.

I recently bought a '74 400 that was set up for the Nevada desert with   Marzocci leading axle forks and early finned Works shocks. It also has the early 400 motor with the light crankshaft, fine for the desert but hopefully your motor has the weights on the crank to slow down the revs a bit for the woods. The pipe appears to be stock but the stock "megaphone" removed and a Super Trapp muffler welded on.

Sounds like a cool bike, I'm looking forward to the photos of the finished product!

Penton Talk / 400 Penton Exhaust Modifications

Hi Dan,
I have seen the name Krizman on many spark arrestors, mostly Honda. I googled it and came up with this link.

http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5319644.pdf

As for the opening of the last cone, I think for the pipe to work properly it needs to reduce down to around 1" and end in a short "stinger" before the spark arrestor/muffler. I have a pipe similar to yours that came on a 250 HS, it had pretty flat power. I put on an Ace pipe that ends in a 1" ID stinger and adapted an FMF turbine core muffler to fit, wow what a difference! The muffler is not period correct but it's relatively quiet.

I'm sure if you can't find one closer, you can figure out a good repair.

Wanted / For Sale / WANTED. 77 mc5 frame
May 28, 2014, 12:34:59 AM
Hi Jerry,

I have a good '76 MC5 frame and swingarm, also a tank and 2 sets of 35mm Marzocci forks I will probably never use as the post vintage class is pretty much nonexistant out here in AHRMA Northwest. Unfortunately I won't be anywhere near Unadilla anytime soon. I would love to trade for a good Sachs B or D motor though.

Thanks so much for figuring this out guys. I don't imagine they sold alot of those 125's, especially out west. Now if I just had one of those motors and the correct tank! I do have a pair of the Marzocci piggyback shocks.

What color was the tank and side panels?

Penton Talk / M25 crank shaft bearings
May 26, 2014, 01:15:26 AM
Andreas,

It appears from your photos you have a decent set of cases. So how loose are the bearings in the cases? Were the old bearings bad, did they spin in the bore and hog it out? Is there alot of clearance, or only a few thousandths? You may be able to loctite them in and be fine. Loctite 271 high strength (red) should work if it's not too big a gap. I have not used Loctite 640 but in my experience their products work as advertised.

This is of course your call as a mechanic.

I have used SKF ball bearings from a local industrial supply, they are  good bearings but as Kieth said would not vary in size from FAG or any other brand.

Penton Talk / Penton Hare Scrambler exhaust
May 24, 2014, 10:09:18 AM
Andreas,

I haven't ridden the bike with the Hi-Point pipe, but I'm sure it will work fine. It looks alot like a stock pipe all the way back to the silencer. The nice thing about the Super Trapp is it's a spark arrestor too.

I raced the Hare Scrambler with the stock pipe and it ran great, it could hang with any vintage 250. I bought a new one from Ace because I wanted to preserve the stock one. Good thing I did because a couple of races later I tacoed the Ace pipe pretty bad. It's repaired now and I run it on my '74 1/2 250. That bike rips too. I put an FMF turbine core muffler on it, not period correct but it is much quieter and has a spark arrestor.
