Thanks guys for your input. When the tickler is pressed down, and fuel is running out of the overflow tube, is a small quantity of raw fuel going through the intake into the cylinder also?

Penton Talk / Carb question.

Thanks for your input Brian.  I assume that the keihin and mikuni carbs and their choke levers utilize a different method to achieve the rich cold start mixture.  Also, why the need for both a tickler and a choke lever on my Penton?  I am a curious person!

Penton Talk / Carb question.

Thanks for your answer Ron.  From your description it looks like raw fuel goes into the engine to create the rich mixture needed for a cold start-up.  I should have known.

I am also a very pleased customer of Vance Smith!  He repaired my dead motoplat and my Penton rips again!  Excellent communication, quick turn around, and much more affordable than the alternative ignitions on the market.  Kudos to Mr. Smith!  It's time to hit the trails!

Paul,

My 1975 Penton Six Days was purchased as a graduation gift in 1976.  I assumed my dad sent the paperwork in and received a title for the Penton shortly after it was purchased.  In 2002 I got the idea to license my bike and discovered it had never been titled!  After a couple of enquiries to the state I made the decision to utilize a titling company to aid me in my quest.  In a short time, the titling company provided me with the necessary paperwork to apply for a title in my home state of Missouri.  I received a Missouri title a few days later.

In order to pass the motor vehicle inspection I had to work around a failed lighting coil in my motoplat ignition in order to get my headlight, tail and brake lights to work.  This was done by utilizing a 6 volt battery from an Honda MT 125 street/trail motorcycle I owned, and wiring it into the lighting circuit.  I attached a bicycle mirror and squeeze bulb horn to the bars and passed the motor vehicle inspection.  Then it was an easy matter to insure the bike and get a license plate issued for my Penton!

My trips were never more than a few miles in length and I never bothered to calculate mileage Paul. Sorry.  Currently the Penton wears knobbies, Cheng Shin brand, as the bike will most likely be raced in a hare scramble in November.  If I ever decide to put several road miles on her, I will look into the Kenda line of dual purpose tires.  Pentons handle very well on the street and turn a lot of heads!!!  Great topic Paul.

Penton Talk / An easy enduro?
September 23, 2011, 12:46:00 AM
A big thank you for all the input guys.  All of my dirt riding efforts during the last few years have revolved around vintage and post-vintage motocross racing.  The adrenaline rush of heading for the first turn and passing someone on a 250 or open class bike with  my Yamaha YZ 100 is indeed exciting!  But so is riding a Hare scramble on my Penton!  Years ago, all I did was trail ride and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Now I want to enjoy that again and feel an "easy" enduro would be great.  I am not interested in battering my bike or body on an insane hillclimb, or downhill run for that matter!  The thought of knee-deep mud or a banzai water crossing do not appeal to me either.  An enduro like the ISDTRR sounds interesting...if the weather doesn't foul things up!  It's time to add some saddle time in the woods to my saddle time on the mx track!  I will consider participating in this year's ISDTRR.  Thanks again guys!

I thank everyone for their input. Removing the ignition cover and drying things out after every ride is a task I have overlooked.  Not any more!!!  Again, thanks guys.

Penton Talk / Broken screw removal advice.
May 16, 2009, 10:18:36 PM
Just want to thank everyone for their advice on how to remove the broken screw on my Penton.  After applying liberal doses of PBBlaster and heat from my heat gun I successfully twisted the screw out using some long necked vise grips.  Hooray!  Thanks again guys!

Penton Talk / Motoplat
October 02, 2004, 08:21:17 PM
Thanks for your reply Don. The schematic in my manual shows a green wire from the motoplat which provides electricity to the brake light switch. When the brake pedal is applied the brake like comes on.  There is zero voltage coming out of the motoplat from the yellow wire.  The MzB sounds good but will it blow the bulb in my CEV headlight?

Thank you Doug and John for your suggestions.  Dual sport tires should do the trick!  Craig
