You might try Matt at speedandsport.com   He caters to allot of different vintage brands and is very helpful. If you know what you have then he can probably match it up for you.

Penton Talk / Fitting Mikuni to Hare Scrambler
July 08, 2011, 01:57:31 PM
Mick
I am using a 34 Mikuni as I wasn't sure the bigger body of the 36 would fit as well with all the angles etc. Sorry but I don't remember the jetting but I am at about 4800' elevation anyhow. I don't notice any difference in power but I am not that fast anyhow and it always has more power than I need.

Gary and Sam, thanks for the input.  What size Mikuni did you run on your bikes?  This 34mm was originally on our 175, but I thought it ran rich.  I put a 32mm on it and it's seems just right.  My thinking then followed that the 34 would be good on the 250, with a larger main and pilot.  Thanks,

Mick

Penton Talk / Fitting Mikuni to Hare Scrambler

I just did the conversion on my 74 250 and cut about 1/2 inch off the intake manifold. I had an extra intake manifold to experiment with so it wasn't so traumatic. Matt Hildenberg from Speed & Sport had a carb joint that works well and it has been trouble free and holds the carb just fine.I used the narrow hose clamps and they are holding that joint. You are correct in that the airbox boot is a pain but I just scrunched it in for now until I can come up with a better solution. It really helps to use a heat gun to soften the boot so it will be more pliable then use the narrow clamps on those joints also. It is sealing just fine but not as clean an installation as I would like. I have one cross country race on my set-up and a few short trail rides and it is working well.
Hope this helps.

Yep sounds like the muffler is plugged or a combination of the two things as you suspect. The Can Ams I had all used a foam filter held on by a metal plate and 3 springs. It worked really well for me. The K&N that screws on to the air box I believe replaces a screw on ring that screws on to the airbox over another metal seat for the foam filter to seat on to. I think that Uni still sells the foam filters for Can Ams. The K&N is probably fine as long as it doesn't have any holes if cleaned and reoiled but they will plug up if they get too dirty and I am not sure about the water issue. The stock muffler on the Qualifiers were very quiet but mine didn't seem to bother the power which makes me think that yours is plugged.
Hope this helps

I don't think I will ditch the bing for now but I am going to give the Mikuni a try.

I had a similar experience with a KTM 250 I had way back converting it to a Lectron carb. The Lectron cured all the problems I was having and made it a different bike. If I could find a Lectron for a reasonable price I may go that way but for now I will try the Mikuni. At least I can get Mikuni jets semi locally so that is a plus for me.
Sam

My bad[:0] ... I did a google search for Lectron carbs and it looks like they are still in business. I should have looked more I guess. I am not sure if they are AHRMA legal howver.

Sam - may want to double check your manual for the starting place to go back to. For 74 250 with Bing 36, I believe it's 165 main, 40 pilot, 283 needle jet, #1 needle, clip in middle groove. A non-worn / no smiley-face slide is very nice if you can find one or you stumble into a reasonable priced version for sale, but new from Bing, they cost about the same as a new Mikuni. Jet for the rest, hope for the best--don't sweat a smooth idle and perfect pickup off the bottom. A worn slide makes no difference at half-full throttle!
Thanks for the info Mac.. You are correct with the  jetting as that is what is in the Bing I have. Upon further inspection I noticed that the slide is worn more than I figured however so I have decided to go with a Mikuni conversion. For me parts are more readily available for the Mikunis. Thanks for the help

Thanks for the info guys...
I knew I could come here and get some useful info. Larry by smiley face I assume that you are talking about wear on the slide? Yes it does show some but not enough to feel...
Garrett thanks for the search referral .. I will work on sorting out the jetting. THat will give me a good starting point.
Bob I was thinking the same thing about the pipe stinger so I am looking forward to getting the new pipe from Ace.
Thanks

Penton Talk / Handlebar fitting question for 74 250
January 07, 2011, 02:14:41 PM
Thanks guys
I will look into all those recomendations. I have been doing a little trial and error with the Renthal trials bars on my 72 Montesa Cota trials bike and the bars I have do physically fit but are pretty high and a bit wide. At least the center section fits without hitting the fork caps... I think I will look closer at some of the  ones you guys are using however.
Thanks

Penton Talk / front brake cable on 74 250
December 27, 2010, 11:13:13 AM
Thanks Kent
Your application looks great and I may go that way. I have seen some that route in front of the number plate and have a keeper or guide that attaches to the number plate but I may try to stay with the stock cable length.

LG I was wondering if I had a cable for a longer travel forked bike too but I guess it is what is suppose to be on here. It is hard to figure out sometimes when you don't have anything to compare to.

Thanks Guys!

Penton Talk / front brake cable on 74 250

Thanks Mike
I think I am going to shorten this cable and re-route. It originally went behind the fork leg and between the top and lower triple clamp and then to the brake lever, but even at that it seems still too long and bows out.
