Michael,
I have a couple of '79 heads that were cut down to allow a later pipe to fit.  Let me know if you want to try one of them and I'll give it to Gary this weekend.  GO PENTON!

For the application that I am building this engine for I need all of the cooling fins I can get; I know this isn't the typical Penton bike, but I'm building my 77 MC5 250 project into a drag bike for bracket racing. Consistent engine temperature is the key to success in bracket racing and the early 1980 KTM 250 engine with hopefully one of Kevins pipes and a 38mm Lectron carb may just be the ticket. I have enough other trail/MX bikes for now, and on this particular project I am in the experimental stage, and with the 2" longer swingarm that Bob Seymour is sending me and the 38mm Marzocchi forks that I can lower the gound clearance with I should have fun with it to say the least. I chose the 77 Penton because being the last year Penton, I want to get the Penton name out there in an area where no one would expect to see it.

I test fitted the 79-81 250 torque pipe, and my 1978 MC5 250 pipe on the 77 MC5 Project bike today. Both of them will fit the 77 MC5 chassis and exhaust flange with an minor alteration to the front frame mounting tab on the 1979-81 pipe, and the addition of a mid section exhaust pipe mounting tab on either pipe. I think the later version is the way to go because of the removeable silencer for the bikes primary racing purpose. I haven't heard anything from Kevin about whether the Circle F pipe he designed will clear the larger engine fins, but if it does, that means it should fit the 77 MC5 250 bikes as well. I will eventually go that route once all of the details are worked out and the bike is completely together and ready to race. Mike
