POG, Were there ever a standard OEM set of front # plate stand offs available that came along with the lighting package for '74 CMF's ?? I'm currently using some billet doodads I made up myself that are about 2.5 inches long to clear the VDO. I have the large headlight w/curved (cut-out) number plate. Seeking to make the bike as original/accurate as possible! Thanks as always for any input!

Chris,
I think the hex stand offs that are being referenced are used to mount the speedo/numberplate bracket on the steeltankers. The large headlight bucket should have a stamped numberplate bracket that bolts directly to the top of the headlight bucket. Can't remember how to post the photo here but I can send you a pic what it looks like on of one of my bikes if you shoot me an email.

Dave is correct.  If you need a picture you know my email Chris.

It is funny. My 12/73 Harescrambler has no stand-offs and the separate (not headlight-mounted) number plate. Bone stock. The plate attaches to the typical re-curved bracket, which has been remade by Karl and is sold by Al Buehner (pentonpartsusa.com). My HS requires no stand-off to clear the VDO on the bar-mount for the VDO. However, my '72 Jackpiner (w/ a bar-mount VDO, not the original steering-bolt VDO mount) requires stand-offs. I use rubber bushings.

The headlight bracket Dave mentions is visible in the parts list, by the way. Good luck. John

Thanks guys for all the speedy info. Dave, you jogged my rusty memory of a picture Ron C. that you sent me about 4 years ago of the stamped piece you speak of. I'm going to use a mix of this info. by waiting around for the stamped piece to turn up someday (repro I've seen is crazy money). John, I too was curious about bone stock bikes with the large can that didn't have the bolt-on bracket and it's what actually prompted this post. Came across a bunch hex studs in various lengths and sizes the other day at an aircraft surplus depot. Think I'll try a couple of those while waiting patiently for the other piece to turn up (it's all part of the fun!). One last thought with reference to your comments John that your JP requires them and HS does not, both with bar mounted VDO's - I believe that it all depends on how high or low the headlight is on the fork tubes. The lower the headlight, the closer the number plate can be to the bars, all at a very slight down/inward angle to the forks and/or perhaps even bolted directly to Karl/Al's piece with some rubber bushings! I have the Kark/Al B. bracket. Once again, great stuff, I love this site. Thanks again, Chris H.

This is an old post but I find myself also looking for some info on the stamped bracket that was bolted to the large headlight buckets for mounting the cut-out number plate.  I would gladly purchase if anybody has one or very much appreciate a picture with perhaps a couple of measurements so that I might fabricate one.  Happy new year everyone!

Remember, if your bucket doesn't have it already then maybe it is not original to your bike/headlight.  I believe the parts list clearly depicts each style.  My 12/73 does not have the bolted bracket but uses the recurve bracket attached to the bars.  Good luck!

There are lots of photos in the photo section:

Rob, email sent.  Thanks again!

John,I picked up a 74.5 Mint 400 a while back and have it restored in MX trim.  I've been collecting enduro kit bits for several months and have a nice large bucket without the bracket but I think this one should have the bracket.

Interesting tidbit...I have a ton of dealer literature given to me by Bill Orth.  In one parts book, there is a handwritten list of Hi-Point accessory pricing that indicates the enduro kit dealer cost was $60.00 and recommended retail was $100.00. I'll take five please!:)
