MX tank question

In the 2010 POG calendar, the April picture is of a Jackpiner that Kip owns. The tank appears to have a pad or cover on the side where the leg and knee would rub.  I have looked in the accessory catalogs and haven't seen that those pads were an option, but I have seen several tanks with them.  Does anyone know the story on these items?

Thanks
Paul

This tank probably won't last long, it may already be sold. I know it would have been mine this morning, if I was'nt broke.

They were like that new, from the factory on MX tanks in mid '73. (frames 305xxxxx - 306xxxxx)
You probably don't remember them Paul, because in mid '73, I believe you were pretty busy working your way towards a gold medal.

I thought they were to protect the finish in shipping, but when I saw Kip's tank at Mid-Ohio last summmer - Kip said they were intended for grip.

Another reason you never see them, is because they did'nt last long after the mud was ground into them. They were a yellow cloth material, and got ugly looking real fast.
This picture is me - first race on a new '73 Berkshire.

Hi Jeff,

First race on that bike. I traded in my '72 Six-Day to get it.
The 100 class was pretty hot at the time. By '74 though the 100 class started to fade.
That race was just north of Muskegon, MI. (Rothbury) At a track called "Old McDonalds Snowmobile Farm".

Those bars with no cross brace were the hot item back then. Were they called "zap bars"?
Jeff
-did you get the email I sent you bout the 74 Ohio State Championship?

rob w

I'll never forget, that year I raced that Berkshire at Red Bud. The day before the National.
Even though I was riding a 100 in the 125 class. Mark Barnett past me soooooo fast - I was starting to wonder why I was even racing ??????
It made me feel a little better after I discovered the guy was Mark Barnett.
:D

Those bars (9" rise) came on that bike new. The whole showroom of new Pentons had those bars on them.
I did not get your email.

Bob-  Maybe it went into spam.  I was wondering if you had the article from the '74 Ohio St. Champ race. The one you so kindly posted the results from the other day. If you do maybe you could email it to me possibly. Would love to have that. =)
Thanks,
Jeff

That info was a full page ad on the inside cover of Cycle News.
I can't remember who it was that sponsored the page, maybe a race track.
It has 5 pictures (head-shots) of the class winners, and list at the bottom of the page of each class 1st through 5th place.
100, 125, and 175 class Champions, all on Pentons.
That's pretty amazing when you think of the Japanese competition by 1974 in MX.
The Cycle News is yours.
Do you think you might go to Pinkerinton for the Feb. POG Meeting. ?

jeff greenberg

Bob-  That is awesome!  My dream would be to get to one of those meetings. Problem is, I'm in Scottsdale. Az. now. It's a possibility though as I have a lot of racing pals in Toledo.  Anyway, Maybe I should give you a chance to look through your stash of Cycle News to see if you have any other "years" articles on the Ohio St.Chp. races. In '73 Regg Rader won the 100's and I got 2nd. I have part of the article on that one in the scrap book. If you find some stuff we'll figure out how to get copies to me. Maybe I can give you may mailing address. Thanks for ging to the trouble!!

Jeff
OH, I thought (and hoped) you were still in OH.
Okay I'll look though them, I think I have at least 40 to 50 issues of '73. Not much at all after '74 (that's when I left home for CA)
I may not get to it for a week, but I will get to it.
Talk to you later. Send your address when you can.

Victor posted this on the VMX site and is listed as the 1973 Ohio State Championship 100cc class.  Sorry, it may have appeared on the POG board previously.
