Your absolutely right here Mike, think of a Penton, or several other makes for that matter, as a mutual fund
you can ride. You can even put your IRA contribution for 2009 in the tool bag, probably safer there.

Hi bob, I have a low mileage 77 Gs 400 also. It looks exactly like yours.. except:   My exhaust is totally different than yours. Do you know if yours is original??  And also how loud is it?  Mines just plain obnoxious... I think its a super trapp

With 241 miles, and no evidence of ever being involved in a crash, I don't know why anyone would swap out exhaust pipes.....
BUT, I have the vehicle's title with the original owners name and address on it. So I'll try to contact him, and follow up on the entire bike's past history.

Bob...the original pipe on my 1977 400GS6 has a capped end held on with 2 springs....A replacement pipe I bought later has a Supertrapp welded on the end. I don't know if the Supertrapp was added by the previous owner but I'm positive the capped end with the springs was stock. I'm sure of that....I'm the original owner.

From the photos I have seen of the 77 models, the GS had the large silencer and the MC's used a smaller silencer similar to the one in Rob W's photo.  But as we all know KTM didn't always do things the same way all the time.

On my 77 GS, the end cap is held on with 3 bolts, no springs.

Tony I've seen them both ways, no rhyme or reason in fact I have both versions on same year bikes.

Regarding the  1977 Penton GS6 that was on ebay . I am not well versed on Pentons and would like to know if anyone sees any glaring things on the bike that is not original
To me the bike seemed clean and original.
Thanks for a reply

Other than it is missing the black plastic chain guard used on the GS6 models, the only other things I notice is that the speedometer should be mounted in front of the handlebars, not behind, and it has a Preston Petty rear fender and tail light. The pics that Bob has posted in the beginning of this topic shows a bike with an original rear fender and tail light as supplied by KTM. Often bikes that were converted to Enduro trim by dealers utilized the Enduro kit which often offered a Preston Petty headlight and rear fender/tail light combination, but most complete KTM supplied bikes such as GS6 models had the previously mentioned fender/tail light combination with a Falk style rear fender. If it was that 250 from Atlanta it looks like there was a serious irregularity in that the bids have been mysteriously wiped out and it was being offered at more than 3x the buyer's cost so it seemed.

I would just imagine that someone made the seller an offer and he cancelled all of the bids and ended the auction, since it didn't look like it would meet the high reserve. I have seen this happen a lot. Mike

Mike thanks for the information . I spoke with Ron Carbaugh and he told me the 250 gs6 did not have the black chain guard cover.
I purchased the gs6 in Atlanta and will make arrangements to ship it Monday.
Oh well that  is my first Penton and can not wait to get it.
Thanks

Larry,
You spoke to me, but I didn't say that a 250 GS didn't have a Black chain guard?  Must have been someone else?
