Man, what a weekend.

I raced Historic Open against Jack Penton, Eric Rigby, Tom Flores, and Roger Paris. I ended up second to Jack, but really I was 3rd because Eric Rigby whooped me all weekend, but he fell twice in the 5 lap moto and that allowed me to sneak into 2nd. I did not ride fast, but I also for once did not get lost, did not crash even once, I didnt even stall the bike, all of which are records for me. I got a dead last start in the 5 lap moto, Historic Open was grouped with PV 50+ so Bob Bean was in there too, but within a few turns was in 6th. The rain overnight had made the track feel like you were riding on polished concrete with wheel bearing grease smeared all over it, it was SUPER slick and the 400 was a real handful. But I kept pushing and moved up to third behind Bob and Jack. I could see at the far back of the track that I was gaining on little by little, and just as I caught Bob he tipped over in a tight right hander, but by then I had run out of time to catch Jack. I got helmet cam footage of all three terrain tests and the 5 lap moto which I will have up soon.

The Penton mounted team of The Flying Squirrels did well too, Ernie and Christopher both won their classes, we all three won individual Gold medals for the Six Day Series, and we ended up 2nd for the Six Day team competition. 19 teams started in New Blaine in the spring, and only 4 made it to the end with no DNF riders. I am a happy with our result, but I am also a little disappointed because I believe we could have won if I had ridden my Berkshire and not the MC5 400.

Preston Petty was there, and I think he signed every piece of Preston Petty plastic that anyone had on hand and really seemed to be basking in the attention, which he deserves. Of course Mr Penton was there and entertaining as usual.

...oh yeah...Jack did a cool wheelie leaving the control check after lunch on Saturday...:D

Dave Lamberth suggested a wheelie contest for next year!

Brian rode like a hero in the final moto, and like he said, getting second to Jack ain't a bad day at all!
Great weekend with many Six Days vets there.  In addition to Preston Petty, a special surprise was Gunnar Lindstrom who was signing copies of his new Husky history book.
Bad news is that a Hodaka took the overall for the weekend, but they had to recruit Billy Burns to ride it...and he left today to ride the Mexican ISDE.  Still, gotta admit, he was pretty impressive on the grass track and flogged that Hodie like it was an egg-eating dog.
Lots of Pentons there and lots of POG members.
"A good time was had by all!"

I am looking for a good photo of Preston Petty from the ISDTRR, possibly from the banquet with maybe Carl, Jack, JP or others in it.  If you have something such as this please let me know.  They usually take a group photo of the ISDT vets at the banquet, one of those might be perfect.

Thanks

Paul,

I know Rosemary was poppin' snapshots at the banquet and I think she got a group shot of the vets.

Rosemary, Teddy, Dave Lamberth and others received well deserved acknowledgement for their effort in supporting the sport. Kudos to all that make this happen.

Hi to All,
It was one fine weekend of riding.  The weather treated us all very well on Sat, but gave us a shot of heavy rain Sat. nite.  That made things a bit sticky for Sun AM. However- Zahn And Tammy AND the Razorbacks were up extra early and went out on the trails to make adjustments so that we Geezers could go out Sun AM and not get buried in some bottomless mud pits.  With out their efforts there would have been ONE BIG MESS on the trails. One BIG thumbs up to them all.

Most of the time we have to deal with dust. Not so Sun. AM.  The ride up the mountain to the speed test was in the clouds which made it difficult to see where you were going.  Everyone took it easy.  No one wanted to take the ride over the side of the mountain 2 track trail.  Adding a little more zing to the trail was the 2 way traffic. Talk about your adrenaline rush.

As always the banquet was a great evening.  I don't know who did the cooking, but the menu was top quility and plenty of it.

Chi Jer and I had a great weekend and packed on the miles.  His Ford Ranger was a huffen and a puffen. I felt a twinge of pain for the little guy.  It realy worked it's heart out hauling a 14' HI point containing 3 bike wiht gear, plus 3 bikes in the bed and a couple of motors to be rebuilt.

Both Of us came came home with the gold for our efforts. Jer was riding his Penton and I was on my Suzuki PE.  Ya,Ya, I know.  But it has been berry, berry gut to me. [}:)]

Helmut (Speedy) dropped a bomb when he made the announcement that he was going to hange up his togges and retire from racing next year.  He will be missed by us all. Speedy is truly a class act and one hell of a racer.  We will all miss him.  Best to you Speedy.

See you down Old Dusty,
Amherst Paul

Here's a pic of Mr B. out on the trail.

Hi all,

I had a great time this weekend too even though it was on a Yamaha IT200 instead of my usual trusty Penton. Alway nice to see some familiar faces and meet new people and I'm already looking forward to next year. This year's reunion ride gets a thumbs up from me too....and yes Paul, in my case one thumb quite a bit bigger than the other right now ;).

It was a fantastic weekend and it looked like everyone was having a great time. I know Rosemary did, I hardly got to see her, she was bussing about with great abandon!!!

In addition to all the famous guys, there were a couple of hotly contested national cross country championships on the line, so the competition was very serious for some.

I was really touched by Carl Crankes stories about Preston Petty. He embodies the spirit of America - one of creativity, inventiveness, and freedom. Thank you so much POG for making it happen to have Preston there.

Also, I want to thank you for your continued support for our Cross Country series which I will post separately.

Hopefully we will see many Poggers entered in our Six Day Series next year.

I posted this over on the Vinduro site, but there may be some in here
that dont go to that site, so will copy it here.
If you already seen it, skip over..

"Back home again in Indiana. All unloaded and bike cleaned up.
I had a great time meeting and talking with a bunch of the Vinduro
group that I previously only knew by screen name.

The Razorback club sure did a nice job of putting on a really nice event
for everyone to ride. They sure did spoil us with all the niceties
and they even promised us a big screen tv at next years catered trailside lunch!
who can top that ? ;)

Sundays trail ride up the mountain was interesting with the Halloween special
effects the club supplied. But I think they had the fog
machine set a little bit too high. Googles and then glass's came off.
My 20-40 vision doesnt bode well for special test times.

The fog and misty rain reminded me of Day one in Italy 86.

Going back down the mountain also was interesting due to the 2 way traffic on
the jeep trails and even more so on the single track trail. As one of the first
few bikes going back down, and vision only good for a few dozen feet, having
bikes appear suddenly out of no-where on your side of the trail raised the blood
pressure up a few notch's.

Sunshine and warm temps greeted us back in the valley though, and the final MX
tests got under way on a track still slick from the previous nights
thunderstorms. In the wooded sections, the clay soil was very slick. Out in the
open areas, the sun was drying up the track rather
nicely.

They combined a couple class's and I got to race with my hero, Jack Penton. I
knew I would need a good start to have a chance with Jack,
My left side starting position wasnt the best, but I ripped off a good
start and was at the front going up to the hump leading into the first
turn, but Jack had a much better smoother line on the outside and
swooped by to take the holeshot.
The next few corners were greasy, so I took it easy to avoid doing
something dumb, Like falling down. I could hear a pack of loud nasty
racers behind me all wanting to win too. So I did what any good MX'er
would do. I pinned the throttle thru some deep mud an showered every-one behind
me the best I could with Arkansas's finest..
Jack had pulled a slight lead by then, so I started working on
trying to whittle it down. I had some good lines in a few spots and
could gain 2-3 bike lengths on Jack, but then he had a couple places
where he would pull me 2-3 bikes back. So I started looking for
different lines. I could see Brian in 3rd place and kept an eye on
him in a couple of spots. At the end of lap 3 I had gotten closer to
Jack and I knew if I could find a spot or 2 to gain a little bit more
I might have a chance at him. On the white flag lap, I took a new
inside line that proved to be like riding on ice. Down I went, sliding
across the track.. Bye Jack... Brian goes by as well..
Oh well, nothing ventured, nothing gained.. ;)
I'm just glad my wife didnt get a picture of it..!

And if Brian had a helmet cam, Whats it take to edit that part out ?
I have trading pins. ;)

Well I just can't let this one slip by  - CONGRATS to the Flying Squirrels and Mr. Ernesto Phillips for his class win.  Kudos to you, Brian K for an excellent ride against the Big Dogs.

I'm curious - where did Billy Burns finish with that super-secret factory Hodaka hardware that he rides:

And GOOD LUCK to you Bill Burns in your Most Excellent 6 Day Mexican Adventure that begins this weekend!!

Billy won the overall but a substantial margin.
