February POG meeting update

Greetings,

  Yesterday Conrad Pfeifer and I traveled to the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum to meet with Jack Penton and discuss plans for the February POG meeting. It was the first time that Conrad and I were able to view the new Motorcycle Hall of Fame Gallery and we found it to be quite impressive, as were the new exhibits in the lower level.  

   I personally found the Hall of Fame Exhibit very informative and inspiring, there is plenty of informative signage with each exhibit to go along with the motorcycles and other related memorabilia that accompany many of them.  The special video that is shown is a "must see" when you visit, it was moving for me to have Jack standing with us when the segment of the video played that highlights his exploits.

   It looks as though the 10th Annual Penton Day at the AMA meeting just might be one of the best yet. We plan to explore the "early days" of Jack, Jeff, Tom and Dane, as well as travel along the time line of their careers. Given the importance of the involvement of each of these gentleman to the success of the Penton motorcycle, as well as to the United States ISDT effort for many years, this gathering will hopefully rank as a "must attend" for many of you Penton enthusiasts.

The date of the meeting is February 5, 2011.

Greetings,

We have a change in mind for this years POG meeting that will hopefully allow for an even more enjoyable day.

There is a meeting area in the main AMA building that we would like to use for our lunch break. This area will afford us a more comfortable area to eat lunch and socialize. This area will also provide us with the opportunity to show some newly found pictures from the early days that Jack is excited for us to see, as the area is equipped with a screen and presentation equipment.  The building is attached to the Museum by a raised enclosed catwalk as well as by a tunnel, so we will not need to venture outside to reach it.

Keeping with tradition, the other portions of our meeting will be held amongst the Museum exhibit, and quite appropriately in the Off-Road area.

Kip, thanks for the inquiry.    

   Jack said yesterday that Tom and his wife have their tickets bought and are looking forward to the trip. JP told me at the last meeting that Mrs. Penton is very excited for their visit.  It is interesting, and somewhat heartwarming at the same time, that a trip back to Amherst instigated by the POG wanting to reunite the Penton boys and their cousin Dane for our meeting, is also bringing pleasure to the Penton Family.  We as Penton enthusiasts are very blessed to have such a warm and close relationship with the Penton Family.

     Dane has confirmed that he will be in attendance, as he always is, and Jack said that he has everything confirmed with Jeff.  I might encourage any of you attending to bring any items that you might wish to have autographed by these guys, as this is most assuredly one of the few times we will have the chance to be with all of them at one time.

    We are now in the process of finalizing the details for the Buehner Supply sponsored lunch, and the renting of extra chairs as well as the lighting and the sound system.

  Anyone out there have any stories about the Penton Boys and Dane they wish to share??

   Thanks, those calenders will come in handy. The long term forecast says the temperature will be close to 30 with just a dusting of snow, compared to last year that is great.

    At recent POG meetings we have had a segment called "what's in your garage", sort of a show & tell with a chosen member bringing in some items. For this meeting Jack thought it would be neat to ask the attendees to bring in an item or two that you might want to show the Penton Family. Maybe something they signed for you many years ago, a special program or picture from " back in the day ", or maybe that letter that John wrote back to you, or possibly some other items that you would just like to show the others.

   This should be an interesting way to show some neat items and to also let the Penton Family know what their acts of kindness meant to you.

Paul Clipper has decided to come out of retirement and join us at the Penton Day event at the Museum. Paul's love for everything Penton was easy to see in his article in Trail Rider on the POG 40/10 event a couple of years back.

The Penton Day event with it's gathering of the Penton family has drawn some interest from a couple of magazines for some coverage and Paul is the perfect man for the job. Paul has always been a great friend of the POG and the Penton family and it will be really nice to have him join with us for the event.

The extended forecast shows a high of 47 on the day of our event. If you are coming, and we hope you are, how about stuffing an extra Penton in the trunk or on the roof and lets fill that circle in front of the Museum full, handle bar to handle bar all the way around in honor of these folks

FYI, if anyones looking for inexpensive motel rooms, I got mine at Motel 6 for less that $35. Exit 110 off I 70, relatively close to the museum.
