I have a motoplat (motoplat PN 9600160) question that has me a little confused.  I am pulling together a 72 Six Day that has been sitting since 79' and the motoplat in it has 3 wires for electrics other than the ignition, these are Yellow for Headlamp, Green for Taillamp and Red for Brake light.  The bike has awesome spark, plenty of juice at the headlamp and taillamp but zip coming out of the red wire for the brake light.

What I am confused by is I thought these motoplats only had 3 coils in them, one for ignition, one for headlamp and one for the taillamp and brake light.  I did a continuity test on the red wire from the where it connects into the red plastic of the motoplat to the end, and all good.  So my question is, do these things have 4 coils in them and if its just 3 how is it possible for this not to work?

One other note, I check both filaments on the bulb using the good green wire and both light.

Thanks,

Kevin

wow all the sparktrologist must be hybernating for the winter !!
I had a motosplat that the tail light coil  wouldn't work and the head light and spark worked  great !!

Somebody knows this answer better than me. My books showing  the blue wire for the igniton coil, green/red for the brake light  and the red /yellow for the head light.  Now I'll assume that the head and tail light are parallel.  One of my manuals shows only 3 coils in the motosplat.

One more note, I have real old books and their contradicting each other over the color code ??  Must be a year thing, I suspect.
c'mon guys help kevin, and me out will ya:)

Raymond,

I got an email on this from Vance Smith and said that there are 4 coils in the motoplat I am using.  He recommended that I connect both the tail lamp and the brake lamp switch to the green wire and replace the 1157 bulb I have with a 6V LED.

I got the bulb in the mail yesterday, ordered it from a place called Superbrightleds http://www.superbrightleds.com/ (PN 1157-R19-6V).  Put that bulb in and I couldn't believe how bright it works, even at an idle it is really bright.  The bulb cost $7.95 but was worth every penny.  I had ordered two, so now I have one on the Jackpiner too and that one works awesome as well.

Thanks,

Kevin

Those LED lights are a great thing.  Also they probably won't break as often when you ride your bikes on the rough trails.
there is a 4th coil now that you  mentioned it, its says its for charging the battery.

North East Trail report:  Trails are open with ice and frost everywhere. There are  smaller mud puddles compared to last weekend.  Wear your wool socks !!!  10f this AM
