I have a 74 Hare Scrambler for sale listed here & on Craigs List. I have been getting emails from a person who claims to be from Atlanta. His english is very stilted & he wants to send me $1000.00 more than what I'm asking to my Pay Pal account. He then wants me to use the $1000.00 to pay his shipper through Western Union. I have given him the names of 2 reputable shippers that would charge half of that & he still insists he needs to go through Western Union.Anyone familiar with anything like this?

Bob,

Just my opinion, but sounds like scam written all over it.  I would make a "cash only" exception for that buyer.

Thanks,

Kevin

Here's important scam information on the Craigslist website:

http://www.craigslist.org/about/scams

"NEVER WIRE FUNDS VIA WESTERN UNION, MONEYGRAM or any other wire service - anyone who asks you to do so is likely a scammer."

Hi Bob; I live in the St. Louis area saw your 250 listed. I have sold several bikes through Craig's List and after a while you get to know the scams from real interest. First give away is the language they use in an email or on the phone. They alway refer to the "item", not what it is, a motorcycle, potatoe peeler, or what ever it is. The second one is asking if it's street legal because they are looking for something to get a family member started in basic transportation. Never mind the fact that if they are looking and have eyes and a brain that the list is full of ready to go street legal bikes cheaper than what youwant for your MX bike that has no lights!!! See what I mean. Sometimes I read the emails just for the entertainment. I had two, 175 Japanese bikes listed and a drunk lady called up asking about my bike on Craig's List. I said which one, I had two listed. She said, "Well, I wanna buy 'em both."  I said,"Well, I don't wanna sell them to you." and hung up the phone. Some of them are SO phoney that I can't believe that ANYONE would fall for their pitch, but I hear it does happen. Just use some common sense, ask for good ole E Pluribus Unum in exchange for your bike, and you'll be fine.
  HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Scam. No doubt at all.

My basic message to people like that is, "you can pay cash when you pick it up".

PayPal is fool proof, isn't it?  I've wondered what would happen if you accepted the money, you then have HIS address from PayPal and you can use your shipper and pocket the extra money?

Mick,
If he filed a non-receipt claim with PayPal and you could not provide proof of delivery, or if he claims if was mis-represented, PayPal could charge you back. I only accept bike sale from trusted buyers with PayPal. Postal Money Orders are the best. Mike

Thanks Mike, sounds logical, not that I would try it; I couldn't sleep if I did that!  Speaking of PayPal, did you get the transfer?

Thanks for all the good comments. I refused to deal through Western Union & gave him some names of legitimate motorcycle shippers. So far have not heard back so I'm certain it was going to an attempt to scam me. Thanks.
