Can anyone id the dirtier of the 2 pipes, it was bought for a 77 MC5 250 but the header pipe angle is wrong.
the shiny clean pipe is the proper header pipe angle for a 250.

It would help if you pictured the entire pipe side by side along with the painted one. Somewhere around later 1977 the exhaust manifold was changed from a straight outlet to an outlet that was angled downward. It could be the correct pipe for the angled manifold, possibly a late 77, or it could be for the smaller angled outlet on the 175. Mike

I'd bet its for a 175. Is the ID of the pipe at the manifold the same? If it does end up being for a 175 I would be interested in buying it.

here are the side x side pics, by the parts book the 175 definitely angles like this

454MRW

The body of the pipe looks too large to be a 175, in fact it almost lookes that the front pipe area before it tapers larger is bigger than the painted pipe. it may be a MC5 400 pipe that the rear silencer tip has been replaced. The painted pipe looks like it has the longer 400 silencer welded onto it; the stock 250 silencer is 10 1/2 inches from the weld line to the tip of the end cap, and is only 1-1/4 inches diameter at the weld, and the stock 400 pipe has a silencer like the one on the painted pipe, only a couple of inches longer with a larger diameter at the weld, like the one pictured on you painted pipe. Which ever ipipe t is, the engine is using the angled down exhaust manifold for sure. Here is a pic of my NOS MC5 250 pipe with the stock silencer. Mike

The painted pipe is from my 400, just using it to show the header pipe angle i need

454MRW

That other pipe shows a dent similar to a late 77 GS6 pipe near the front down tubes of the frame. I would put a
downward angled exhaust manifold on your bike and use it. If you want it to look correct, Parmabike sells Pillordino's correct reproduction silencers on eBay and offers a 10% discount to POG members if you order directly from him. Mike

Any idea where to locate an angled exhaust flange

454MRW

After late 77, it was standard on 250-400 engines, and may be the same size as the 420. This one pictured on eBay is the most common one, or call Gary Ellis 217-260-0237 and he might have one to spare. Mike

Spoke to Gary earlier today, he thinks he has some and will get back to me later today,Al Buehner still has some new ones when I checked with him and I need to order a few more parts from him anyways so would be almost the same price as the 1 on ebay you linked, also Marsattacks is checking to see if he has the 1 that came with that pipe.(thats who sold it to me)
All in all it turned out to be a relatively easy fix

Thanks for the help

Maurice

Mike... I ordered a downward exhaust flange from Al Buehner $45 and it still does not fit. The header fits in now but the brackets are not close. The front pipe bracket is 1 1/4" too high and the pipe is 1/2" from the threads on the left petcock no room to screw the petcock on. The rear bracket is the right height but is 3/4" short of the rear mount.
Here are pics of it now
It doesn't seem like this pipe is for a 77 mmc5, any other ideas

marsattacks

Any ideas greatly appreciated.  We will get to the bottom of this!  Mayybe this is not a KTM pipe?  Maybe someone will need it?  Maybe it will turn out to be for a CT-90?:):)

Not unless it fits a MC5 400 with the angled exhaust manifold in place, since as I mentioned earlier, that the size of the front header pipe looks larger than your 400 painted pipe in the pic. Mike

Is there a difference in the mounting points on the frame of a GS (high breather frame) compared to the MC5 and could this be what this pipe fits.

454MRW

Starting in 1977, the GS-6 has a fully shouded rear section with a large removable silencer end piece, which this is obviously not, as evident of the pipe where the silencer is welded onto it. I do not know if there was an MX version of that pipe, but also as I mentioned earlier, the front section with the dent looks like the 77-78 GS250 front pipe, as I have a 78 GS6 250 and my brother has a 77 GS6 250, which both have the downturned manifold. I am not aware of the downturn exhaust flange being used before mid to late 77, or it could be a 75-76 Cross Country MX pipe, but I am not sure if there was an MX pipe for that bike, which is why I figure the MC5 400 which would at least position the front mount in a different location than the 250. Here are pics of a 77-78 GS-6 250 pipe. Mike
