Aluminum fenders on the 250,  Looks better than the plastic ones!

Daniel P. McEntee

I can't read the fine print in the specifications, but the biggest thing I notice is that the 250 is call "The Mint" instead of "Harescrambler". I have read here on the list that it was originally intended to be named that, and I think that this is the first thing I have seen in print. Wish old man winter would finish releasing his grip so I could get mine out and organize my garage!

I see the 125 is listed as having 21hp and the 175 has 20? I don't know if this is correct or not. Less hp and more torque? Hank

The error is in the name...as mentioned above...

The 250 was the Harescrambler.

The 400 was the Mint.
The name came from a big desert race...which I believe started in the Las Vegas area...called the Mint 400.
Memory fades with my aging...but perhaps the sponsor was the Mint casino???

Yep,Del Webb's Mint Hotel and Casino was the sponsor-the real shame is it's a car/truck/utv only thing now,no motorcycles. That's discrimination!

Thanks Ric (Sixdazed)for the History lesson about the name.  I swear those days were so magical and we never knew it at the time.  I know you have a lot of History of California Desert Racing and thanks for all you do for the Penton Name.

Was the original colour of the 250 Gold [?]... The colour of the tank in the brochure looks to light for red  so it would make sense the name Mint would be gold.... BT

Yes, it was yellow, sometimes referred to as gold. I purchased one of the first Hare Scramblers on the East coast from a shop in Baltimore and it was definitely that color. I distinctly remember that since shortly after purchasing it, I dropped the tank while removing it and a hole was punched in it by a foot peg. Yikes! Fortunately, it was an easy fix with fiberglass and a bit of spray paint.:)
