I have a friend's '72 125 six days, that I am trying to get running. I unstuck the motor but when I took the case cover off of the right side, a bunch of brownish sludge came out. It is a red motoplat. Is there any way of rebuilding or trouble shooting it. Thanks, Gary

Gary,

My recommendation is to first remove the Motoplat(make sure you make a mark on the engine case so you can get it back close to the correct timing) clean it up and put it back on the engine.  Then check to see if you are getting spark at the plug when you turn the engine over.  If you are getting spark, the Motoplat should be good to go.

Good Luck

Ditto to what Tony said, but also clean and remount the tab where the coil mounts to the frame under the tank. On Barn Fresh bikes, I usually cut the ends off all wires and re-terminate them to make sure there is good contact. Any extra resistance anywhere from corrsion on an old Motoplat may cause a problem. And make sure the plug is grounded before you kick it to check for spark. Vance Smith here on the POG list and on VINDURO list can repair old Motoplats also if you don't have any success.

There are two types of Plats (both red).  Earlier models have a diode contained inside the stator which is prone to failure.  This would be identified by looking at the color of the spark plug wire which in that case would be black.  In the newer version the diode was moved to the coil (away from the heat and vibration)and would be identified by a red spark plug wire.  Earlier ones can be repaired by removing the faulty diode (a type a repair that Vance does) and use it with a red wire coil.  Cost is about half of a new PVL or MZB but you are still operating with a repaired vintage ignition.  Check the inside of the flywheel and make sure it is not rusted up to the point there is no magnetic connection.
