76 250 GS.....

So.... I am rebuilding a 250 GS...  When I took the motor out of the frame, I took it out complete, one piece... no problem.  Upon re-installing the motor back into the frame, I installed the bottom end in first, and then went to put the cylinder on. That is when I ran into a problem; the cylinder is taller than the clearance between the top of the cylinder studs, and the bracket for the pipe.  Has anyone else run into this problem?  On my MC5, the pipe bracket is in a different place so it is not an issue.  I don't see how anyone in the middle of a race could do a "quick" top end change

You have to remove/replace the engine whole, or at least I did. I dont know about the 250 but you cant get the top end off the 400 in an MC5 frame either, you have to take it out as a complete unit.

Never had a 400.. but on the MC5 250's it can be done.  The GS 175 can be done in pieces too.

You could try to hold and move the studs together with the cylinder. Insert the piston and then engage the studs into the case. This way you only need to clear the piston which you can be moved down.

I ended up shaving about a 1/8" off the pipe bracket to make it fit. I just found it strange that it did not clear from the factory...  I thought maybe one of out fast shoes had ridden this model bike in the 6 days and had some other answer for it. Thanks for the input!

You couldnt open the engine, or even take the head off in the ISDT so getting the engine out in the race is not something they worried about.
