James Niebrzydowski

Hi everyone,

I am new to this forum and would like to introduce my self. My name is James and I live in n.w. Pa. near meadville.I have a few vintage cycles.I have wanted a penton for a while and last year I got a 72 six days, it is in rough shape but I thought I could bring it back to life.

I got the repair + parts manual from Al (very friendly guy) and started working on it. The motor was on its 2nd over bore and worn out out so i bored it and got a wiseco piston.I am now looking to replace the main bearings and anything in the lower end that needs replaced.

I have a few questions,

1) The bike did not come with the air filter, the parts manual shows a paper element held in place with a spring loaded cover is that the only option for air cleaners?
2)The rubber cushions in the rear hub look alright but feel hard I was wondering if they might fail being as old as they are?
3)I measured the play on the crank and the trans shafts and think I will need to add shims, the ? is where do you get these shims for the crank and shafts.

Any suggestion for what to look for , and do's and dont,s in the bottom end  would be very helpful

Thanks
James

Hello James.....welcome to POG. As to your new piston, did you drill the oil hole? If not, I'm sure a call to Al or checking the repair manual will get you the location and size. Have fun.

I live in Thompson, Ohio not too far from you. I am a new Penton Six Days owner this year also. Mine is a 74 and a basket case. My bike has a wire cage that would have had a foam air filter over it. I would think it would work for the 72 as well. I am just getting ready to begin the rebuild so you may be a bit ahead. I have been racing the North Atlantic AHRMA hare scrambles series on a Honda SL125, much modified, but would like to race the Penton as well. What are your plans for yours, garage queen or rider?

Oil hole...what oil hole?

Engines that have an exhaust bridge running vertically up the center of the exhaust port require a small hole drilled in the piston precisely in the center of that bridge below the piston ring to lubricate the cylinder bridge to avoid hot spots and the potential of engine seizure, but that only pertains to engines with an exhaust bridge. James,
Welcome to the POG message board!  There are a considerable number of very knowledgeable folks here that can help you along your way.

Typically, I think most of us use a foam filter whether it is Uni or No-Toil.  Each one of them uses a little different oil/clean procedure.  Terry Everette (under suppliers) still has a wire cage listed which would be needed to go to foam.  Occasionally one appears on Ebay.  Good luck with your project!

Uni filters come with their own wire cage, here is the cheapest eBay listing I found. Mike

Welcome James - loved my first Six Day (a 1972), eventually even learned how to shift it. :)

Team POG has been very helpful to me.  Also some great set-up/mods you can look to do if you want to go racing on the Six Day.  I just couldn't leave mine alone.

Rick Bennett bought a Penton?  Geez, you and your brother are fast enough already on your Hondas!  Have fun with it, Rick.  Hope to you at an XC race on that thing once you bring it back to life.

James Niebrzydowski

Hi everyone, and thanks for the warm welcome.

My plans for this Penton are to clean it up, paint what needs painted, rebuild the motor completely and ride it a lot and race it a few times a year.

This cylinder does not have the exhaust bridge so I  guess I don't need the hole in the piston.

What holds the foam type air filter in place , is it the # plate.

I got the crank bearing race out of the clutch side case using a hot plate and a set of piston ring pliers, So far I haven't been able to get the ignition side crank bearing race out with this method,Any suggestions.

Thanks James

Use a good air filter oil and squeeze out the excess, and once the cover is installed, it holds the filter tightly against the airbox, but liberally grease the sealing edge to help it seal against dust. Mike

I will use the uni filter I run one on my husky and they work good.

the forum search lead me to think I wasn't getting the case hot enough with the hot plate, so I put an aluminium tray over the case while on the hot plate that got it up to 400 degrees, and 3 taps with a rubber hammer and the bearing fell out.

Thanks James
