Wayne National Forest riding questions

Greetings,

I have heard about and read about the Wayne National Forest riding area in Ohio. I do have a few questions that possibly one of you fine folks who has ridden these trails can answer, your help is greatly appreciated.

In reading their website info, I realize that permits are required. They mention the need of a drivers license, then they mention about motorcycle endorsements, but I find it difficult to see if a motorcycle endorsement is required, is it?

Do you need to have a registration for your motorcycle to get a permit?

Do you need proof of insurance?

Are there different requirements for out of state riders, possibly coming from Pa. to ride in the fine state of Ohio..:)

Just how large is the trail system in miles?

If there are different trail heads what one, or ones do you like the best? My preference is for the tighter more single track type of riding vs the wide open quad type of trails.

What I am looking for is a way to take the family of son, son in laws, and possibly grand kids to ride. Oldest grandson is only 8 and loves to ride, but he may be to young for their rules. Some of our machines have no proper titles, but they are orange so surely that should mean something...:)

Any and all help / information is greatly appreciated.

Looks like a ORV/APV sticker needed as a minimum.

Looks restrictive on obtaining an Ohio ORV/APV sticker.

Thanks Dale,

I have read pages and pages of the posted info. What I hope is that some one who has "been there done that" could possibly provide some first hand knowledge of jumping thru the hoops. If we can get thru "the hoops", then just where do they recommend we unload at to ride their recommended trails.

Kind of like when you read about riding an enduro or other event, they list all of the "requirements", but in the end what is the "reality".

If one has info that they would not like to provide publicly please contact me @ [email protected]

Thanks
Paul

Paul,

You can just buy a weekend pass or a year pass at a local motorcycle dealership. It's not as strict as it appears to be. The WNF does patrol the area basically looking for anyone without a pass or riding on non-designated trails.

Be prepared if you go that these are maintained gravel trails...yes there are spots that will have some mud but for most of it it's really enduro trail turned into a fun trail system for all level of riders.

The trails are shared with ATV's, Bicycles and the loops are directional but you have to be careful because you will have locals riding different directions. It's definitely vintage friendly!

I hope this info helps.

Thanks Mike, that is what I was hoping to hear..:)

If you go, plan on riding the Long Ridge trails out away from the main corridor and Dorr Run loops.  True single tracks and good riding.  Either park there or at Monday Creek.

Insurance and street tags only needed if you ride on the roads and daily/weekend passes can be purchased online.

I was just there on November 11th, and the riding was awesome.  Not very much gravel, overly maintained trails or ATV traffic back in there.  Most of the ATV's at this time of year are deer hunters.

Thanks Rob, I sure appreciate the information. Looks like a Mars expedition team just might need to head that direction...:) Rob, what are you riding when you hit these trails? Surely a modern bike with a button...or ???   I would be on a 125 EXC KTM initially, but I have a street legal 250 Penton that just might enjoy the exercise...thanks to another Martian..

Most of the trails would be a lot of fun on either bike.  I was riding a GasGas 450 FSE but I sold it last week.  I am working on a 2008 Kawasaki KLX 450 making it sreet legal.

Remember, Ohio Deer Gun season  runs November 30-December 6th.

Over in Long Ridge area, there are some trails with downhills that would add some serious pucker factor with drum brakes.  Some nice big hills and single track there, though.

Thanks Rob, sure do appreciate all the tips.
