Bing carb Worn Slide 1/24/153

I have a Mudlark with a Sachs 1251/5a motor. I can only get it to start and run with the choke on. I raised the needle and adjusted the mixture screw with little effect. When I took the slide out it appears to have been fettled quite a bit or maybe its just wear? Is there anyone who can supply slides for this carb?

    Have you done an extremely good job of cleaning the carb, including all of the passage ways as well as the jets. Take great care to see that the idle jet is clean, you should be able to see thru it longways as well as across it thru the little holes. If it is clogged longways sometimes a wire on a wire brush can be used to help clean it out, VERY IMPORTANT !   Do you have another carb you can bolt on to see if it makes a difference?

   I am not saying your slide isn't in need of updating, just that for the carb to be so non-responsive to those adjustments I would think something else could be the issue.

Thanks Paul, I'll have another go when I get chance. I did give it a good clean out when I got the bike last year but then got sidetracked with other projects like you do and never tested it at the time. I've just seen a type 84 copy on ebay from Hong Kong at $39.99, is this compatible with mine?

When the choke is "on" is the cable slack or tight?  The position of the lever can sometimes be misleading.  A slack cable would indicate the choke is off.  

Look at the choke plunger when you have it apart.  Verify there is something there to seal off the passage in the carb body.  Commonly the rubber is missing or has been eaten away by ethanol.  

If mounted to the cylinder with a rubber flange, check the rubber for cracks or air leaks.

I'm unfamiliar with what type of Bing is on a Mudlark, I just want to point out if the choke is a slide in the main carburetor slide with a handlebar-mounted lever like the majority of Pen tons, a slack cable is with the choke on and a tight cable is with the choke off holding the choke slide up out of the way of the flow of air through the carburetor. This however may not be the type of choke on a Mudlark carb. Mike

My Jackiner has the choke as part of the slide (tight cable off).  A standard small bore Bing with the choke integrated into the body (loose cable off).

The Jackpiner had me going for awhile and the Amal on my Mudlark still does [V]
