Six Days loading up

Been out for a ride on the weekend. My 6 days starts quite easily and runs ok from cold but is a tad sluggish off idle then it sings perfectly in all the other rev ranges but when i get to a slow spot in 1st or 2nd gear she just bogs right down and it takes minutes to clear that fuel. It almost seems like it has clear all of the fuel from the float bowl before it cleans itself out.
I am running a 26mm Bing with what I believe is stock jetting. I was at about 3000' with the temp about 75°F. I played with the float once trying to make it close a little earlier but with no success with the loading up problem. Float is a white one so I guess I could try a black one. Float needle appears to close ok not letting fuel leak past. Motor is not fresh but has not done a huge amount of work and feels ok as I said it starts ok and runs well when on the gas. Does anybody have any suggestions?
Cheers Bill

Bill,

Does sound like a possible float issue, could be the new fuels have done it in. Once it is warmed up and starts to act up, try shutting off the petcock and seeing if it seems to clear up, obviously it will run out of fuel, but there should be a brief period of time when it will run on the reservoir of fuel in the float bowl.

When it starts to lean out as the bowl goes dry, and if you are quick enough to turn on the petcock and see if the loading situation returns, you may be able to further pin point the problem.

I also seem to remember folks mentioning a piece of the choke innards going bad with time and causing problems, possibly someone with knowledge of the choke issues could chime in.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply Paul. Will try your suggestions. Choke has been blocked off for some years with solder so I could check that but you can run it at idle not under load with no problems.I will try one fix at a time and see where I end up. All the best Bill

Pull your choke assembly and inspect it.  There should be material on the bottom which seals the plunger against the carb body.  I have had success with cutting and press fitting in a small circle of cork gasket material as a replacement media.

Also take a look at your needle and needle jet to make sure they are not worn.  The needle jet will take on an elongated oval with wear and also cause similar symptoms.

This is the classic symptom of a worn needle and needle jet, not the float needle but the needle in the slide and the needle jet. You can not see the wear with your eyes, but it will cause the exact problem you have. Call Bing or Al B and get a black float set and a new needle and needle jet.

Bing has discontinued the black floats they only have the white ones still available. I called about some earlier this past fall. Mike

What?!? Even more reason not to waste any money on a Bing if you can fit a Mikuni.

The white ones will last for quite a while but they're just not as long-lasting as the black ones before absorbing gas. Mike

Put in a NEW needle jet and look at the slide, I bet it has a smiley face.  If so replace the slide.  Have had this problem MANY times with Bing and these things always fix it. You can debate all the other BS but this IS the problem almost 100% of the time.

Fantastic response guys. Will put in an order with Al as soon as the minister of finance approves it and all the other minor items i need to get from him.

Well, I got 3 reprimands from the moderator for using the term BS in this post.  I have seen this problem with Bing carbs come up here hundreds of times over the years and have experienced it with Bings plenty myself and everytime it comes up every possible solution that could be wrong is brought up and in the end 99 out of 100 times it is the needle/needle jet wear and most of the time is combined with a worn smiley face slide.  But all the other possibilities are discussed and the already frustrated owner chases his tail and in the end comes to the logical conclusion based on percentages and experience. I have seen the discussion so many times it seems easier to cut to the chase and end my own frustration which is where the bs comment comes from.  I never enjoy a reprimand and that probably goes back to my overbearing childhood. So I sure don't dig 3 reprimands for one post. So as a result I will keep what I consider a lot of experience to myself in the future and let the debates go on about stuff and go my own way. Best of luck to all and to any that are offended by my negative comments No worry for the future. I guess being offended can go both ways.

I so very rarely use the internal email that I mistakenly hit the send button three times.

Collectively as a group we need to treat commonly asked questions like it's the first time the topic has come up. A second option would be to re-post a previous thread on the same topic.  Not everyone understands how the search feature works and even I have trouble myself locating information I am looking for.

I think it would be wise to have some sort of Frequently Asked Questions file for new posters to read with the most common problems a new Penton owner is likely to face. A worn needle and needle jet in a Bing would be a prime example of a good FAQ file question. I'm sure we could all whip up a 10-15 topic FAQ pretty easily.
