Hello all
I have a Saracen that I am going thru for a friend. It has a Sachs
125/5A motor. It also has a 152 top end. What trans oil should I use and is there a oil level screw? this is my first Sachs motor I have worked on. What are the chances of finding a head gasket for this motor?

Thanks
dale

Typically the amount of trans oil is 700cc as recommended by Doug Wilford.  I use 80 weight Golden Spectro Gear oil but everyone has their own preference.

The cast iron 152cc cylinder did not have a head gasket.  The head and cylinder are lapped together.  Will look to see if there is a tech article on the procedure.  Still check with Al to see if he has a work around.

I pulled the head off last night. The top of the cylinder is flat and so is the bottom of the head. There is a head gasket that looks home made. Without the head gasket the piston hits the head. The bike runs pretty good tho. It has an amal carb.

It sounds like it does not have enough base gasket material to make the deck height correct. With the correct amount of stacked base gaskets it would probably run better because that would raise the ports slightly. Mike

I never thought of that Mike, The head gasket is pretty thick with a metal ring at the cylinder. I would have to measure it but it looked to be about 1/16" thick. It could be a gasket from another application. Lawnmower or something like that.

Greetings,

Is it an oversized piston? The original 152cc jobs were created by cutting some material off the base of the cylinder and using a Yamaha 305 twin piston. The material was cut off the cylinder base to give the proper deck height. The Yamaha piston also had a larger wrist pin than the Sachs so the aluminum rod with a bushing was needed and the bushing was reamed out to fit the wrist pin.

Later on Penton had pistons made up with the wrist pin located so that the base of the cylinder did not need cut, and the wrist pin was the same size as the Sachs so it was much easier to install and a steel rod with a needle bearing worked fine.

So, what I am wondering is if the cylinder base was cut for a Yamaha piston and when it wore out possibly one of the later pistons was used, hence the need for a head gasket, when in reality the base should have been built up to keep the port timing the same as original.

I am assuming that this engine has the cast iron cylinder...Just want to be sure as I have seen and owned a few 152s that were created using the later aluminum cylinder, which did use a head gasket.

Hope this helps.
Paul

Thanks Paul,

I will check the cylinder tonight. The piston has a high dome shape with no markings on the top. I only had the head off. Would a stock Sachs base gasket work and are they available?

Al Buehner for sure has the base gaskets but would be good to figure out exactly what you have in case some fixing is required per Paul Danik's post.

The cylinder is cast. I believe it is the original piston to the cylinder but I can ask the owner if he remembers if it was changed.
