74 fiberglass airbox repair

I am into the airbox now and need some advice its in rough shape and i have to repair ,holes, faded etc...after i patch it up and sand can i paint it ,  put a clear Gel coat over it  and still  come pretty decent  ???  Its not going to a show room and unfortunatly  cannot send out to have professionally done ..any thoughts ???? thks Brian T.

Brian,Be sure to get yourself some latex gloves of some sort to keep the resin off of your hands. Acetone is about the only thing that will cut that stuff and it is very hard on your skin. I would recommend that you use the fiberglass mat rather than the cloth unless you need a lot of strength in the repair area. The mat is easier to work with than the cloth. You can buy the repair kits at most auto parts stores. Also to cut down on finishing time,cover the fiberglass with wax paper. This will allow you to smooth it out and work out any air bubbles. These are the methods that I used when restoring my old Corvettes and seemed to work out ok. Dennis
