I have some new and redone kickstarter halves and would like to assemble them.  Al has the roll pins but not the spring and detent.  Has anyone done this with substituition parts or ideas on what to use?  Thanks!

The detent can be any ball bearing that fits. The hard part will be the spring. It needs to be a pretty heavy sucker. Measure up some known good parts and go to the McMaster-Carr web site and see what you can find. For the spring you want to know the wire diameter, the coil diameter and the length. Longer ones can be cut down. I haven't worked on one ion a while but the last one I fiddled with I fixed with stuff from my junk  box. If a detent groove is wallowed out too much, weld it up and make a new one with the correct size drill bit. I would really need one in front of me to get into more detail but all my stuff is packed up in the shed, waiting on spring and warmer weather to get back into some projects.

I believe the detent is not a ball but a missile shaped piece with a point Dan.  Maybe I am wrong.

If that's the case, just chuck a slug of round stock near the size, (perhaps a fuzz bigger)in your drill press or drill motor and shape it to the needed size and shape with a file. Can be done quite quickly. Like I said, in my mind the spring is the hard part, mainly because I don't have a good sample to look at.

I thought about trying to make one up from a similar size welding rod. Mike

Larry I have made the missile shaped part are ( locating pin ) from a phillip screwdriver end. There are heat treated but can be ground down with a dremel tool.  The key is to grind slowly as not to take out the temper. Keep the part cool and you can same most of the temper. Also I have made Clutch push rods from screwdrivers also. Worked great. Dave

Thank you!  Great idea!
