Greetings,

In 1973 there was a husband and wife team that rode some of the ISDT Qualifier series, and I am pretty sure they were both aboard Pentons. The wife was a really neat gal who did some incredible riding and whom could surely be a role model for todays lady rider / racers. Who were this husband and wife team ?

They were featured in the epic "Bad Rock" ISDT Qualifier movie, which by the way if you have not seen you might want to order in for some really great entertainment, as well as a great insight into what the ISDT Qualifier Series was all about. The link below will take you to a clip from the Bad Rock movie.

Anyone know where to find the movie?

Daniel P. McEntee

Try either Strictly Hodaka's website, or the Preston Petty website. Paul Stannard sold Strictly Hodaka to some one in my area, St. Louis, MO a few years ago. I get emails from them with sales and such, as I had purchased stuff from Paul before during some Hodaka rebuilds. I just don't have the links handy right now.
  Type at you later,

Did you ride this?
When you gonna write that book?

Rick,

Did you order the movie, if so you will be able to answer the trivia question correctly and possibly win the " Mars Rock " 1st prize that will be awarded to the first person to answer the question properly. The only stipulation is that the "Mars Rock" can not be shipped because of the enormous weight involved, surly an understandable contest regulation :). I will make every effort to get the "Mars Rock" to the winner personally.

To clarify, the couple in the trivia question were both Penton riders.

To answer your question, yes, I did ride the Bad Rock event. The Bad Rock and Trask Mountain events were held on back to back weekends with Trask Mountain running first and then we headed to the Bad Rock event. Proud to say that I picked up a Gold medal at both events in 1973. Interesting to note that Bad Rock did not give out the customary medals, instead they presented special pewter mugs with the Bad Rock logo colored in gold, and I assume the silver and bronze properly colored as well. Mine is still packed away from the move but I am pretty sure I have described it properly.

Doug Wilford was the overall winner in 1972 on his Penton, if I remember correctly. I don't know what the rider count was in 72 vs 73, but with the ISDT being held in the USA in 73 there was an increased interest in the Qualifier series by riders such as myself who wanted to try to earn a spot on Team USA.

If you watch the movie, as they show the riders getting ready to start the second day the narrator will say "this rider is ready for anything" then show the only Martian in the event standing at the start line with a large hammer in his hand....I had a dented rim that required a little persuasion. I had found out that the event was called Bad Rock for a reason.

A number of years ago Peter Starr came to Amherst, Ohio thru the efforts of Honda dealer Dale Barris to show his "Take It To The Limit" movie in the Amherst theater. Many POG members went to the showing including Doug Wilford and myself. Peter Starr was there and was greeting folks as they entered. I thanked Peter for making the Bad Rock movie and mentioned how I had a few seconds of fame in it as I was the guy with the hammer. Peter replied that he had always wondered who "The Hammer" was and from then on Doug Wilford always called me Hammer:) Sure do miss Doug, we always had a lot of fun and laughs together.

Paul

PS  I will try to remember to bring the mug to a POG meeting, as well as the hammer as I still have it. Wonder if John has ever signed a hammer handle ...?

PSPS  I went to the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum for the opening of their ISDT / ISDE display a few years ago and Peter was there as well as he had been inducted into the Hall of Fame the night before. Peter is a very warm and friendly gentleman and it was a pleasure to spend some time with him. His Hall of Fame bio link is below.

Another great story Paul. I did order the movie after a bunch of searching. Some day you need to complete the story on what it took to become a Penton team member and ISDT rider. You guys sure had a bunch of fun back then. When all this virus garbage passes I think another trip for my Six Days will be to ride out to "Hodaka Days" and check out the area. Fire up your 125 and ride along!

This is just a wild, off the cuff guess...
John and Beth Cooper?
There couldn't have been that many husband/wife teams and that is the one that leaps to mind.

(not sure Paul if I'm giving too much away for your trivia question? Apologies if I am but I'd like to have that Mars Rock given to Richard Colahan. Loved hearing your stories about Karol and Dick, two thumbs up ;).)

If I'm way off..excuse a poor aging memory. But Mike Rosso's hint may be a give-away. I seem to recall Karol (Noss?) DeGraw and her husband (Dick ???) were accomplished Enduro riders from Michigan (again...???). I seem to recall that Karol was a multi-time finisher of the Jack Pine and was perhaps the finest female Enduro rider in the country in the late 60's/early 70's. If I've got any...or most...of this wrong...my apology and I'll blame it on a poor memory![?]

If I remember correctly, Dick DeGraw rode a 200cc Triumph Tiger Cub with much success in the 60's. Also, when I went down to Abingdon VA in Oct 1972 to ride the 350 mile Lonesome Pine (won by Jake Fisher...) they showed a brief film from the 1971 event with Karol in it...she was a 1971 finisher. Those of you that rode it will recall the 2 day, 350 mile Lonesome Pine as one of the classic Enduros from the "golden age". 200 m on Sat, 150 or so on Sun...with crossings of the Little Holston River with hundreds of spectators.

We have a winner ! Actually two....

Congratulations Rickard Colahan for not only providing the correct answer of Karol DeGraw, but for also providing us with some interesting background info on her and her husband Dick.

Mike Rosso had sent me an email when he posted the picture of the Bad Rock video which provided the "hint" for all to see, in which he provided the correct answer of Karol DeGraw but asking that the contest be allowed to play out. Mike was so impressed with your answer Richard that he has asked that you be awarded the Mars Rock instead of he :) What a great sport he is.

Richard, we will need to work out the details of the Mars Rock awards ceremony and delivery, possibly at a future POG meeting or event.

Rick Bennett, would you consider doing a "movie review" of the Bad Rock movie after viewing it ?

Paul

Rick Bennett

A review would be ok except the DVD they sent me was road racing and flat track "Take it to the Limit", not what I ordered. Complained and reordered. Will have to wait to see "The Hammer".

Paul Danik

Rick,

Be sure to watch " Take It To The Limit ", it is an awesome movie...and you just might be singing this song for quite awhile afterward.... just like Doug and I did after watching it at the Amherst theater. :)

If I remember correctly Dick built experimental helicopters as he was an accomplished engineer. At Fallen Timbers National enduro near Toledo Ohio in the early 70's he had a Triumph Cub engine in a Penton frame powering a hydraulic pump powering rear wheel hydraulic motor instead of a chain.  Pretty sure that was correct.  Since I had ridden a Penton, still had a Cub and still do today I remembered that.
