shift key and boss chroming

I read in an article that the "not too good" Sachs gearbox design could be helped into a state of infinite function by chroming the selector boss, selector arm pin and the shifting key. Can anybody confirm or dismiss
this?

The "old" Penton riders here used to have some of the shifting parts hard chromed and swore by it!
