Yahoo restoration group REJECT

After much urging from my brother I got into vintage racing this spring.  He let me race his husky and I was hooked.  I promptly bought an evolution class elsinore and have raced it a few times now.  The local track runs a vintage winter series so I began looking for a sportsmans class bike to work on as a summer project.

I set my heart on a Penton and began lurking at this site quite a bit.  I learned a lot by just quietly reading.   I responded to an add posted in the for sale area of this web site and after a road trip from Washington to central California I am now the proud owner of a 1973 Penton 250 Harescrambler.

After arriving home and closely examining the bike I decided it was too nice to run the entire winter series at Woodland.  During rainy spells the track conditions at Woodland are simply brutal on a bike.  The mud is extremely abrasive.  I figured I could race the Penton on nice days but I would need another bike to trash on when the track got nasty.

So I picked up a 74 Yamaha MX 250 that I designated my "Mud Bike".  This is great I thought now I have two summer project bikes.  I have been working on both and reading here frequently.   I ordered an owners manual and rear fender from Larry Perkins.  I even filled out the application and sent a check along with it to join The Penton Owners Group.

This brings us to my unhappy point I am at today.  While browsing through the message board I read several references to the Yahoo restoration group.   Evidently there is a wealth of information available in the archives.  So a week or so ago I went over to yahoo and filled out the application to join.   Today when I opened my email I found that I have been REJECTED by the group administrator and the decision is final.

What the heck is up with that?

I am a very low profile guy on the web so I know it isn't from any investigation done by the administrator.

Does the administrator just arbitrarily reject all people he doesn't know?

It's hard not to take something like this personally.   It seems a bit cliquish.  Are all Penton owners snobbish towards new owners?

If it's an effort to cut down on spam there are other ways to deal with it.  Arbitrarily rejecting people is a lazy way to deal with spam.

This has me a bit bummed.  I'm going to concentrate on the MX for now since I know enough about it to get it ship shape.  The Penton can stay in the corner for a while.

Oh well, I can take a little solace in what Groucho Marx said.  "I would never join any club that would have me as a member."

Matt- not sure what's up w/ the restoration group site...tried to sign up for it couple of times myself and never figured it out. Better than getting rejected I suppose, but same result. BUT better than reading about it is DOING restorations and hands on with other local Pentonites with projects, right? There's at least 2 of us w/ multiple '73-'74 Penton/KTMs here in Portland, at least one Penton/Sachs guy in Salem, and a '76 KTM guy out of Seattle, and we all converge on Woodland regularly. Not a lot of us, but enough for some hands on know-how and lots of spares. Look me up next time at a VDR event, or maybe at the Hammer & Tongs event in July? Planning to bring my '73 Harescrambler and maybe a CZ for fun... we can set up our own NW Penton network of sorts.   Jon McLean, [email protected]

Hey guys! I don't know all the details on this, but, have heard a few things. Too many folks geting yahoo memberships and attaching a bunch of porn to e-mails. I think the adminstrator is just being extra careful about who he lets in. I do think once the SA finds out you are ok he will let you in. Hope this is at least 50% correct.

Your right Donny,
ok guys all you have to do is put something in your profile that lets me know your a pog member or a penton owner. I have no way of knowing who you are from the profile you guys have listed . send me an e-mail and let me know or leave me a clue in your profile.
otherwise the rest of the members will get bombed with spam and porn on their home email address.

Hey matt,
I have tried several times to get set up on the yahoo site as well with out any success.
not sure why, I finally decided that it was me. I am not all that good at these computer stuff. I was going to have my wife help me one of these days when I have the time. I have been so busy that I have not even had my bike out of the shed.
Glad to know that there is another Penton owner here in the great Northwest.
I just started racing this spring too. I sure like that track at woodland and it was great to meet BigMac.
I am planning on riding the hammer and tong in july. look me up I have a 76 KTM, it is red with an aftermarket pipe.
I am planning on being there for both days because I am looking for a 125 for my growing boy. Hopefully he will  be joining me for the up coming winter series.

Thom Green,I own and ride a 76 250 MC5 MX which I bought new.

I'll try the yahoo application again if it will let me.  I'll be sure to include some pertinent Penton info in the profile. Thanks

Thom
I've seen a red post vintage Penton roll past in the pits a couple of times.  I haven't had an opportunity to check it out yet.  I'll definitely be going to hammer and tongs.  I'll be sure to look you up there.  Good luck with the 125 search.

I may have already met you.  I am terrible with names.  At the last Woodland race someone had a gorgeous 73 Harescrambler that I just drooled all over.  I talked to the guy he said he was having some transmission trouble with it. It kept jumping out of gear.  That may have been you.

That bike really did it for me!  After looking at that beauty I absolutely had to have one.  The huge finned barrel and radial head, the fiberglass tank with the leather strap.  There's just nothing else that looks like that.  I got all fired up and drove from the middle of Washington half way through California to get one and I couldn't be happier.

Thanks for all the replies guys
Matthew

Matt - I guess we must have met, since I have the only '73 Harescrambler that's been to Woodland AND had a jumping out of gear problem. Glad my project made a good impression on you--you need to see it now that I've repainted the tank. put new plastic and new seat. Now I think it's gorgeous too.

Three years ago I wandered onto the Woodland event, stumbled into Blake Langdon and drooled over a cherry CZ he was racing. I promptly went out and searched the country for my own first CZ vintage bike. Now Blake runs the  whole show at Woodland Vintage Dirt Racing. Funny how our little vices spread the  infection! Race you soon! Mac
