GS-6 vs MC-5

Is there a difference between the GS-6 and MC-5 motors? Also, are the 76 and 77 motors the same for both models?

Brian....I've heard many discussions about the difference and it seems the biggest (or maybe the only) difference is that the MC5 is configured to be 5 speed and the GS6 is a 6 speed. It seems 1st gear on the MC5 is actually 2nd gear on the GS6. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than myself can give you more info.

I think that steve is right. everything that I have read leads me to believe that the porting etc. is the same, with the only difference being the GS is a 6  and the MC5 being a 5, well sort of... it is just that as steve said the true 1st gear on the MC5 is non functional but could be made to with a little work. It does require the splitting of the cases. If you planned on this anyway it would be no big deal. If not like me I am going to leave it alone until such time that I will need to split them.

Thats right. Both motors were the same,only different pipes. Also both Penton models came with the 6 speed. I believe only the mc-5's sold as KTM's,out west, were 5 speeds.

Mike that would explain why my bike was a 5 speed and when I bought it new I had thought I was getting a 6 speed. I was disappointed at the time...now I wish it was a 6 speed. I know I could get that coveted real first gear if I was willing to split the cases. The last time a split the cases on a bike it did not turn out so good. So now I will not do it any more. I will leave it to the pros. I will wait to do that when there is a reason to do so and I have another bike to ride during the down time.
The worst day riding is still better than yard work.
