Magnesium Hubs

Has anyone tried welding small cracks on the inside of the old style magnesium hubs? I have a couple like that and was wondering if I should try to have someone repair them, or should I throw them in the junk pile?

Randy I can't answer your question but I would like to know the answer too as my brother and I have several that are cracked

I use Hi-Tech Welding up here in KC (Lee's Summit) for all my bizarre welding jobs.  I'm taking them a mangesium head tomorrow which they said they can weld for me and I'm picking up a cast iron Hodaka head which had two fins damaged during shipment.  Each time I've used them they've done a remarkable job and plenty of local racers use their services.  POG member Andy Lippert told me about this place.

Im sure they would weld up good however if they are the early type they may crack again, espically in the hands of a faster rider. Novice racer, play or show should be fine.

Part of the problem is the Magnesium gets brittle with age. All the Magnesium Hubs I find or see are cracked. Doug Wilford was also looking for a good set but I don't think he found any either. I wouldn't use them except for show. Use the aluminum hubs. Safer.

These hubs won't be used for racing, so I think I'll try and get a couple repaired & see how they work.
