I'm still looking for some airbox components for this bike.  There's a filter "brace", a filter "arm", and there's the airbox "lid" that I'm still missing.  Anyone know of a good source for these or have a 250 basketcase?

I was told that a 520 chain was what I needed for this bike and I bought a long one (126 links).  However, it doesn't fit properly on my sprockets.  Does anyone know FOR SURE what size chain I'll need?

Any help or advice is appreciated.

Phil, I believe your bike was originally equipped with a 530 chain. A lot of people converted to a 520 chain and sprockets when the stocker wore out. I would suggest buying new 520 sprockets and use that with your 520 chain. Sprocket Specialists should be able to supply the correct sprockets. You may have to shim the countershaft sprocket to get the correct alignment with the rear if your bike did originally have a 530 chain. The difference between a 520 and 530 is 1/8" in width. They have the same pitch (5/8").
What type of airbox do you have? I have a couple of different KTM airboxes from the '79-'80 era. One is from a 250 and is made of orange plastic. Is there a mold number or P/N molded into the box?

Thanks for the advice, and that's what I'll do then regarding the sprockets!!!

The airbox is ORANGE alright but I didn't see any part numbers on it the last time I was working on the bike.  I have some pictures of the airbox and could take some more later this week.  I'll let you know and see if we have a match.

THANK  YOU!

If your 250 is anything like my 420 from the same year, you will find that a 520 chain is too narrow, and a 530 is too wide. The proper chain size is 525. Don't run a 530. It will FIT on the sprockets, but the chain will move from side to side because they are narrower then the chain. Your chain guides and sprockets will quickly be ruined from the side-to-side slop. Also, the plastic part around the countershaft will hit the chain if it runs to the inside. Then when you get the proper 525 chain after running the 530, the alloy rear sprocket will quickly wear out. I speak from personal experience, you may hav ebetter luck.

Solution? 520 sprockets are available. Buy them and be done with it. I now have a new 530 o-ring chain with about 20 minutes ride time on it, a new 525 chain with two races on it, a broken botton chain guide, and a worn out sprocket that was in good shape before the 530 chain was put on.
