Brake questions

Hi guys
I've noticed that there are fairly large gaps between the front and rear brake backing plates and the hubs on my '75 KTM (Penton). I take it that this is to allow any water and muck to drain out.
 
On my bike, the rear drum seems to have been skimmed at some stage because the linings are very thick and don't seat very well and there is excessive brake pedal movement. I can do three things here; replace the hub OR put extra thick linings on then set the whole backing plate/shoes in a lathe and turn it to the correct diameter OR shrink in a new liner.

Any advice out there?

This is a common problem on old rear conical hubs. However the cam is wide enough that you should be able to move the lever back another notch and still use the wheel without the cam sticking sideways. Also for some reason new brake shoes seem to make a huge differance even sometimes when the old ones dont look too worn.
