sachs clutch help; please

I am trying to replace the clutch cable on a 1972 6 day. I have followed the owners manual perfectly but am still unable to disconnect the cable at the clutch through the hole. I have tries as described lifting up and just about everything else. Is there a trick I am missing or will I need to remove the case.
