I have my rear brake off and the backing plate is all worn out where the cam contacts it. Looking in the 1977 GS parts book, it shows a dust cover and the other related brake parts. They all cross reference with my 1976 mc 5 parts book. The brakes, backing plate and shoes are exactly the same.
On the 77 GS model, the rear wheel bearing pertrudes into the brake area much more so than the rear wheel hub on the 76MC5. THis forces the backing plate out further and has loads of space in it, it does not contact the drum correctly and consequently, the bike doen't stop.  I could machine the boss down on the 77 backing plate to get the brakes to contact the drum correctly, of course I'd have to add a spacer to the other end.  The difference I see is in the wheel bearings location. Also the 1977 GS6 book shows a dust cover, mine dosen't have one. The bike was built January 1977
Any inputs on what the situation is here? somethings appears odd[?]

I ran into the same problem a while back. The bearing had moved in the hub, and was not snug up against the spacer that separates the two bearings. Bang it back in and you should be good to go.
Without digging out my parts books, I believe that all of the backing plates are identical (as well as the dimensions) from the first of the conical hubs on (through at least 1977). In fact a rear sprocket that I got from Sprocket Specialists was for a 1983 250 MXC so I suspect that these hubs go on way past the days of the Penton marque.
As for the dust seals, I used and appropriate sized "O"ring last time I put one together.
I just checked and I have a spare backing plate that I would be happy to donate to the cause for the cost of the shipping. Let me know.

Thanks Mike,  I got it all back together again, The bearing may have moved, but at least I know all the parts are/should be the same from one model year to the next.  E mail me off site [email protected] about the brake backing plate
